It's a solid list. The writer isn't into Sea Change/Morning Phase Beck. Remove those from the equation and this person at least has the 4 best albums at the top. Midnite Vultures has to be Beck's most underrated album. It bothers me that most people rank Odelay above it.

I think Midnight Vultures and Odelay are his most overrated albums because he's trying way too hard. On all of his other albums, it seems like he is being natural. But those two just make me shake my head. Maybe I'm just not a fan of party rock. People ate it up regardless.

It was very lame when "Mutations" came out and Beck's label went out their way to announce that it wasn't his "real" next album.

"Odelay 2 is coming soon! Worry not Beck fans!"

Pissed me right off and still does.

Wow, that is lame. I think "Midnite Vultures" is probably my least favorite Beck album, all told. I don't object to the theatrics of it, his "wearing a mask," so to speak, I just don't think many of the songs are very good. "Sexx Laws" and "Beautiful Way" are the only two songs on that album I really dig from memory. It's probably due for a reappraisal.

"Odelay" has a shop class, duct-tape-and-glue vibe to it that I'll always like--I think it was and remains a beautifully creative record, and I like that it manages to be so meticulously sampled and arranged while still feeling kind of homespun and rough around the edges. "Midnite Vultures" feels too sanitized by comparison, and for what's supposedly his party record, most of the songs really just aren't any fun.

None of them are as good as "Mutations," though. Every song on that album is damn near perfect.

If forced to choose I would have to go with sad mellow Beck over party rock Beck. Only if forced. I dig both.

Or you could just take the best of both sounds and choose Mutations.

Sea Change is in my Top 10 of all time, so this is an easy choice for me. Only listened to Morning Phase once, but seems like a worthy follow-up.

Same. Sea Change trumps all, for me.

Mellow Gold is still my favorite album from him, though I love or like most of his work.

edit: and anyone who says its his Pablo Honey is a clown.

In preparation to see Beck later this month, I thought I better get acquainted with "Guero". And then I came across this gem. God, I love Beck.
