Re: Rank the Albums: Results Thread!
I would say most get through about 6 or 7 just like you before much of a drop off. There is the rare occurrence where that 6 or 7 includes Avocado or Backspacer or Lightning Bolt and not Riot Act, No Code or Binaural, but they are few and far between.digster wrote:There's no way to know this for sure, but I wonder at what point most people, when making their lists, felt like they were getting diminishing returns. For example, Riot Act may not show up on my list till 6 or 7, but that doesn't mean I dislike it, or think it's a failure in any way. It's great; they've just made a bunch of records I think are better. I wonder where most people make the turn from, "it's lower on my list, but still great," to "these albums aren't all that good." Maybe that turn never happens for most people.

No Code is at the top with Ten. Vs is near the top. I have tended to have a tougher time with Yield and Binaural, as they seem hit-and-miss to me, like Vitalogy. Āhuacatl, Lightning Bolt and Riot Act join them in the big old middle. Backpacer at the bottom, although it's growing on me quite a bit.hlniv wrote:I would say most get through about 6 or 7 just like you before much of a drop off. Re: Rank the Albums: Results Thread!
Yeah, I actually would say at this point, I love all their records besides the last three (Riot Act took the longest and was by far the most improved over time). Lightning Bolt is different for me than the two before it, because it continues to improve when I listen to it. Backspacer and particularly S/T sounded worse and worse as time went on.hlniv wrote:I would say most get through about 6 or 7 just like you before much of a drop off. It's almost as though simply arranging the albums in list order turns out to be a poor way to communicate the way you perceive and experience them.
That can't be right, though.

So what you're saying is we need ratings, not rankings. Let's start all over again!McParadigm wrote:It's almost as though simply arranging the albums in list order turns out to be a poor way to communicate the way you perceive and experience them.

You're right as usual. You reminded me of statements like "i think "A" is the best album but i listen to "B" more often".McParadigm wrote:It's almost as though simply arranging the albums in list order turns out to be a poor way to communicate the way you perceive and experience them.

Include me in the rarity club... Only Backspacer is below the dividing line for me. Riot Act, S/T and Lightning Bolt are all in my "It's a great album but something has to be ranked between Binaural and Backspacer" category.hlniv wrote:I would say most get through about 6 or 7 just like you before much of a drop off. Re: Rank the Albums: Results Thread!
Yea, this is certainly true. My "A" could be anything from Vs to Yield at certain points but my "B" is usually anything from Binaural to Lightning Bolt. And it's been that way for a long time.Mine wrote:McParadigm wrote:You reminded me of statements like "i think "A" is the best album but i listen to "B" more often".
