Re: Song of the Moment: Lightning Bolt
If PJ had absolutely no recent singles charting on radio, would they still be able to fill most seats on their stadium tours? I would guess so at this point. So, fuckin, fuck it.

The pros are, when they’re ready to do something a little more outgoing, significant – whatever you want to call it, that’s what I call it, I can’t help myself! – they call me again.

I truly believe he has sucked the life out of the band in the studio lately. Blame goes around but Lightning Bolt really sounds like arse to me. I dont like his meddling in the group nor do I appreciate his cockiness about it. I think he is a hit maker (tries to be) and not a true artist himself. It feels as though his stamp is all over the music.

But, this is the "title track". So it's better.McParadigm wrote:It's possible. And I agree about "cred," although they seem to act off a blueprint rather than respond to the changing times. Case in point: they have this weird history of trying to push all these dynamically "epic" songs as third singles, even though nobody ever really wants them. Love Boat Captain was the third off of Riot Act, Gone was the third from S/T, Amongst the Waves from Backspacer. In every single case, the single failed to generate any momentum for the album. Why they keep doing that like it works, I'll never know.Tuolumne wrote:All true. I think SBM is the much bigger single, but to those not familiar with the album and the band's later years, would hurt their "cred" without a little counterbalance. I think I read somewhere there were some changes to Republic's management team, I wonder if that is what may have stalled LB promotion.
Never underestimate the influence of business class passengers on the marketability of old white people rock. Middle age buys records like nobody else, and as a general rule they love a known quantity. All in all, the most surprising thing for me is that the album is doing about as well as Arcade Fire's, and if you told me that 6 months ago I would have laughed

Stip, Stip, Stip....
GTF, Wishlist, DTE. How can you even compare those to these? They were still tunes that held on to credibility and passion.

Do you people really believe this? If that was the issue not releasing it as a single would have solved it.cutuphalfdead wrote:Remember when they left Sad off Binaural because they were afraid it would be a hit?
The original tracklist would have had 7 Vedder songs plus a co-writing credit which is 1/2 the album. This would have been the record with the most Vedder songs in their catalogue. Sad and Education were the obvious choice to be left off Binaural in my opinion.

The truth is probably somewhere in between. Betterman was never released as a single, either.Mine wrote:Do you people really believe this?
