Re: Song of the Moment: Sleight of Hand
I agree that this is the song I would most like to have been in the room for it's arrangement and construction, because I have no idea how a song like this comes into being. I mean, it says Jeff wrote it, but I can't imagine him (or anyone) coming and playing it on acoustic guitar; "it goes like this, OK?" There's something more ethereal there.

Right, structurally and musically its not a challenging song. Its what the band added to it that is wonderful. I can't imagine the PJ of today even being capable of creating such a song.

Not that I know of.--- wrote:is the demo of this one available? would be great to compare the earliest sketch to the album take
I really hope there's something analogous to The Beatles Anthology someday for Pearl Jam. Especially cause they write songs in so many ways, it'd be really interesting to see the initial germs of these songs.

Re: Song of the Moment: Sleight of Hand
what's the chord structure for the verses? sounds like stone just kind of noodling around.Strat wrote:As far as notes/chord struture goes...Sleight of Hand isn't all that complex at all.
The chorus is a;most the same as "Hard to Imagine"
A to A/G to G
THe pre chorus is E and D.
Super simple. But its the landscape that is created and the palette exploration that makes it significant.

I love the fifth chord Stone plays at the end of every bar. It sounds like a question mark.

Love this song, too, but it always puzzled me that they absolutely cannot pull it off live. Never seems to capture what they did in the studio with this one. Anyone want to point me to a live version that's worth hearing?

They'd need a third guitar to pull off what they do in the album, and they'd need more aggressive distortion than what they seem to use live these days.PryTo wrote:Love this song, too, but it always puzzled me that they absolutely cannot pull it off live. Re: Song of the Moment: Sleight of Hand
I absolutely love this song. I'm surprised you guys like it too, I thought this was one of those hated Binaural songs. There are a good amount of live versions that are very good too. I love the ethereal guitars in the bridge, and that powerful chorus. Just another great song from my favorite album.
If Pearl Jam were to try to write a song like this today, you'd end up with Pendulum. Another great song, different, but definitely along similar lines.
I hope they continue to explore this sound. Start experimenting again. Stop letting Brendan O Brian decide what the fuck the album sounds like, and take some pride in their own art.
