For all the talk of PJ lightening up on their recent records, Mankind, to me, actually sounds like a studio track where they really are having a good time. Maybe the fact that it was Stone singing as opposed to Eddie made it feel like it didn't have to live up to any expectations, and consequentially they were willing to loosen up a bit.

I can understand that. No Code was so divisive, and that probably had something to do with it. But that's also probably why I loved it so much at the time. After Vitalogy, I'm not sure they could have gotten much more serious. They would have tipped into unintentional uber-parody.

Certainly the initial reception. But that would have likely changed over time. Songs I used to be sour towards I now really like and have a new appreciation for.

We've talked about this a lot over the last year or so, but there is also a substantive change in how pearl jam wrote songs with the middle period records (or at least no code, binaural, and riot act--the albums that I like the least). The song writing is more introverted, the performances often more subdued, the content matter a bit more probing/a bit less certain. And in general I think the band is stronger (or at least playing more to my tastes) in other areas. It's also the period where I am the least enamored with Eddie's voice. So it's not just that.

had to go with Mankind just bc of what it represented in PJ's catalogue at the time (Stone writing lyrics and singing). whether it turned out good or not, it was an important step

I had a PJ playlist on shuffle the other day, and In Hiding came on after Brain of J, and it strangely worked. Played around with it, and I think you can definitely swap In Hiding and Faithful in the tracklist and it works ok in terms of songs surrounding them. In Hiding being the second song is a little strange, but there is a nice flow to it

i've always thought it sounded kind of gay.

maybe its presence in Single Video Theory put it in this bigger category because people got a peek into its alleged studio demo rehearsal

or maybe people are just gay

at this point, it strikes me as almost a preview into Ed's future career as the chief lyricist for intro credit montages for network sitcoms.

i actually had to pretend i was happy to hear it when PJ started playing it at BK 2, just so as not to spoil the mood for my concertmate (and much of the crowd) who were super excited. Although, I don't hate it. I just don't get this tingly boner that everyone else gets when they hear it. I did take it as a positive signal that the band intended to try to bring their "A" game that night ... because it didn't look like it was supposed to be part of the setlist ... and was happy to hear it in that sense.

Mankind sounds more out of place on No Code every time I listen to that album. It would have been a better b-side or an x-mas single or something. But Mankind gets the nod, because everything on No Code is perfect and I love No Code forever.
