There's a lot of 16 bit garbage floating out there as people don't understand HD FLAC / 24 bit. Bad encodes and lots of 'em. Just buy the regular FLAC people.Simple Torture wrote:chud's right, but somebody better alert the gremmie.net guy anyways.

Re: 2013 Official Bootlegs
Coach: My advice would be to buy the regular (ie. 16/44.1) Apple Lossless files from Nugs/LiveDownloads.
They're identical to the regular FLACs and will import straight into iTunes.
I wouldn't worry about the HD-FLACs, honestly. The difference is relatively small - and your iPod can only play regular 16-bit files (ie. standard FLAC/ALAC/CD quality) in any case so you'd have to do a further conversion in order to transfer them across.
Stick with the ALACs.

There's no difference in quality between Apple Lossless and FLAC so that's not really necessary.CopperTom wrote:Isn't there an Apple app that plays regular FLAC? Leehro's app?

Thanks for the advice guys. I wish I knew more about this stuff. I thought an audio CD represented the best sound quality out there. And thanks for the show recommendations.

Re: 2013 Official Bootlegs
Audio CDs are the standard, but they aren't the best. The sample rate is 44.1kHz and they're 16 bit in resolution, so anything you burn to CD will be converted to that. HD-Flacs are higher in both resolution and sample rate, thus are of higher audio quality.Coach wrote:Thanks for the advice guys. I wish I knew more about this stuff. Chud, if someone played randomly mixed HD FLAC and Audio CD files do you think you could pick which is which with a high percentage? I'm not trying to be a wise ass. I was playing around with that the other day and was getting tripped up on just 320 Kbps over FLAC.

Re: 2013 Official Bootlegs
I bet you 9 times out of 10 I couldn't hear the difference between a good 320 mp3 and a flac recording let alone the difference between flac and HD flac. By the amount of audio snobbery around hear I'm sure most people will say they can.bada wrote:Chud, if someone played randomly mixed HD FLAC and Audio CD files do you think you could pick which is which with a high percentage? Then again I might hear a difference on a $5000 stereo or $400 headphones.
Also, are we really at the point that a regular cd doesn't sound good enough anymore?

I've collected all of the shows so far in FLAC but I'm certain some of them have been converted down from 24-bit to 16-bit.

Are there any signs of 24 bit to 16 bit conversion to look for?Birds in Hell wrote:This drives me nuts too.CopperTom wrote:I wish I knew what the correct file size was for each show to help me weed through the junk.Birds in Hell wrote:Agreed.CopperTom wrote:There's a lot of 16 bit garbage floating out there as people don't understand HD FLAC / 24 bit. Not really, it's just annoying not knowing whether they were the original 16 bit files or someone's conversion (and you don't know how it was done, whether they did a good job, etc.)CopperTom wrote:Are there any signs of 24 bit to 16 bit conversion to look for?Birds in Hell wrote:This drives me nuts too.CopperTom wrote:I wish I knew what the correct file size was for each show to help me weed through the junk.Birds in Hell wrote:Agreed.CopperTom wrote:There's a lot of 16 bit garbage floating out there as people don't understand HD FLAC / 24 bit. From memory, when they began offering the 24 bit files, they were slightly more dynamic than the 16 bit files (though not by any huge degree). I like to know there's going to be some consistency from show to show if I'm going to make a compilation or mix from at some stage, that's a lot easier if I know they're all from the same initial source.

Then one night I came home and was coming down from an acid trip, and decided to put on my headphones and listen to Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here album
Drugs
My last acid trip was years ago, but to this day, I still hear elements in the studio Present Tense outro that never would have been there if not for the late stages of one of my last acid trips in 1997.

Re: 2013 Official Bootlegs
This isn't "breaking news" to anyone here, but man, after listening to a 2013 boot (Charlottesville) I am so glad that I never invested any $$ into purchasing boots from the post 2003 era. Clearly, Ed had it going on from '98 to '03. And there's still some '95 shows and early shows (Unplugged) that I'll forever love.
Ed just does not have it in a live format anymore. There are a few exceptions, but in general, all the screeching and failing to reach the high notes was cringe worthy. "Go" sounds like a 15-year-old's voice changing during puberty.
I'd much rather see the band all but eliminate the tours, and just concentrate on cranking out new records, where Ed sounds good because of the studio magic or whatever.
On the plus side, aside from playing everything too fast, drums, bass, guitar all sound great. And having a nice live version of Pendulum will be good moving forward.

This was rectified pretty shortly after it was initially released.JH wrote:Did anybody buy the Phoenix 24bit FLAC from PJ.com? I just realized that the first five tracks of disc two are 16/44 while the rest of the show is the 24/96 I paid for. Anybody else notice this?
The affected tracks are:
D2 T1 Wishlist
D2 T2 Infallible
D2 T3 Do The Evolution
D2 T4 Once
D2 T5 1/2 Full
I sent an email off to PJ.com, so hopefully they'll fix it, but I just noticed after having the show for a week, so I thought I'd mention it here in case anyone else hadn't noticed.
