Vote for GSMF. Dissident is a good song though.

Dissident.

It's bombastic, it's borderline cheesy, it toes the line between melodrama and completely ludicrousness, but it's still freakin great.

Gonna See My Friend has probably been the most-improved song for me when it comes to Backspacer, though.

I'm quite fond of GSMF but Dissident beats it out.

I particularly love the latter's (largely) instrumental bridge, that's good stuff right there.

Gonna See My Friend is just there for me, probably one of my least favorites songs.

wow I might vote for a Backspacer song. Dissident has always been one of my least favorite early PJ songs.

Its pretty much the only combination of those two albums where I would possibly vote BS over Vs.

Both are in that loud obnoxious PJ category. I went dissident because I enjoy playing the guitar part.

I always thought (well, maybe not always--but I think it now) "Dissident" was a pretty, delicate ballad masquerading as chest-thumping alt-rock. There's some heart and melody in the song that its mid-tempo thud can't help but conceal--shame there haven't been (to my knowledge) any acoustic versions over the years.

"GSMF" is one of the best songs on "Backspacer" but "Dissident" is one of my favorite early PJ tunes. Vote for "Dissident."

There may be a better song in there, but as it is, its dangerously close to the worst kind of moderate alt-rock blandness they were unfairly accused of. The story has always struck me as bizarre, too. Not in a good way. Of all the things to write a song about...

Burt, narrate the story of "Dissident" as you understand it.

Just lay it on me. No listening. Just give me your interpretation offhand.

I don't know what the story is, so I won't know if you're right or wrong.

There is this dude in the snow or something, and he is sick, and this chick picks him up, and takes him to a cabin, but it turns out the gov'ment is looking for him, so she turns him in.

But she has to turn around to turn him in, which makes no sense. Where was she going? She wasn't hanging out with the dude? I assumed they banged at some point. So she left at some point to get food or something, but then turned around and sold him to the state.

Its a stupid song.
