I'm torn between these two feelings. I'm not sure if Even Flow is a good song that I'm just incredibly bored with, or a dumb song that I rank inappropriately because I was a 15 year old nincompoop when I first heard it.
Either way, I like Gods' Dice. I like that it tempers its punk crunch with such stumbling, almost disoriented perspective. I like the guitar work in the "resignate..." section. I like that it (and pretty much every fast track on Binaural that isn't titled Breakerfall) has a kind of different personality than Pearl Jam fast songs typically have.
I dunno. I always like when they create a noncommital, almost amelodic swirl for the verses of a song. It leaves a great open space that fits Ed's vocal dramatics well. But there's something about Even Flow's music that just seems almost inorganic and....wanky isn't the word, but just....I get nothing out of it. The move into the chorus sounds kind of good, but beyond that, it seems to capture a lot of what it was about Ten that I was glad they shook off.

I think (and everybody is free to give me all the shit they want if I'm wrong) this is always a big risk when writing songs starting with "let's write a song like...." or "here's a riff let's see what we can do with it".
I was leaning towards Gods Dice cause i was so sick of Even Flow and have never been super fond of the studio version. Then i remembered how awesome it is on LO2L. So there I find myself voting or even flow because its fucking even flow.

I get the "inorganic" comment. It is a formulaic song and I can see how it may be boring in that aspect. I don't agree at all but I get it.
I think there's an interesting debate potential in this. I understand why some people are drawn to music that is formulaic and/or feels inorganic to me, it's perfectly legitimate.
Seems like one of their more organic songs to my ears. I like the way it flows. That monster intro into the first verse sounds perfect to me. Most of their songs don't have that quality. I dunno.
I don't really hear formulaic or inorganic in that song, although I'd imagine what those words mean to music changes from person to person. I think I'm personally just burned the fuck out on that song. I'm way more likely to reach for Gods Dice today, but unlike other instances I'm not sure that's the fault of Even Flow.
