I buy it, but it's so far gone, and lingers for so long that the pain turns to an off putting self pity. Once the song made that shift in my mind it lost quite a bit of its power.

It dropped for me as well too. In the mid-late 90s it would've been in my top two or three. But even in dropping (in large part because of the way it turns into self-pity) towards the bottom of my top ten, it still says in the uppermost of echelons for me. I can easily see why people would be turned off by it though.

although 'i got shit' may no longer be reflective of modern gucci edvedder, at the time, it was powerful, and accurate, and that is reflected in the recording. marriage falling apart, band falling apart, prob some substance abuse going on in there... no food, no jobs, pets heads falling off ...

but red mosquito is a better song imo because i like the guitar solos

I think the obvious question here is...

Would you rather have to drop a deuce or get bit by a mosquito?

You'll feel some pretty sweet relief after ridding yourself of that load. You'll get satisfaction from itching that bite too though.
