I've never understood how that differentiation could be made.stip wrote:Basically some people are mad/frustrated/disappointed that pearl jam has not made the record they want them to make, and are mistaking this for a failure rather than a choice.
This is, of course, a perfectly good reason to not like what they've done.
"These are great songs! It's a shame they're not in my very specific type of rock style, or else I wouldn't have to dislike them!"
PJ has never gone too far off the beaten path of their style. I don't really see any of their albums being so bizarre to their fanbase (or at least a fanbase like this one, very knowledgeable about their music) that they'd be unwilling to judge it on the merits. Basically, in other words, I don't think anyone dislikes Backspacer because it's not their style. I think they dislike Backspacer cause they feel it's crappy.

I agree with you, but I've come to realize a lot of people feel quite the opposite and think they've covered vast stylistic ground.digster wrote:PJ has never gone too far off the beaten path of their style. To this day I still think Ten is the album that most sticks out as being stylistically different from the rest.

I could care less if I ever hear sleight of hand or sometimes again, but I think they're good songs. I can appreciate what they are trying to do, but it doesn't appeal to me.
I agree these may be real nuanced distinctions in this case, but shit, this forum is nothing but thousands of posts about 140 songs

here's the problem:

and

affect different people in different ways. In Ed's case, it made him turn into a giant:

and the intense emotion that had been lifting the music into overachieving places that it would not have otherwise gone has evaporated, and what's left, when coupled with their always relatively limited professional musical tool kit, sounds like an ass after 164 slices of american cheese

I think they've definitely made transitions, but as to stip's point, I can't see someone who loves Riot Act listening to it, and then putting on S/T and having it be so far from the band they just listened to that they can't even see the songs for what they are.Lament wrote:I agree with you, but I've come to realize a lot of people feel quite the opposite and think they've covered vast stylistic ground.digster wrote:PJ has never gone too far off the beaten path of their style. Re: General Pearl Jam Bitching
I made the argument on here once that rather than try to push the boundaries of their sound a la U2/R.E.M./Radiohead/etc., they opted to retreat further into their sound to explore the nuances within in. If I remember correctly, my argument was met with quite a bit of hostility. But I think that's kind of what the last three albums have been. After spending the better part of a decade retreating into themselves to explore to small corners, the past three records show a band who have decided to step away from the crevices only to find that they don't really have the knack to make a bigger record like Ten, Vs., or even Vitalogy anymore (though Vitalogy is definitely the start of the retreat into nuance to me).digster wrote:I think they've definitely made transitions, but as to stip's point, I can't see someone who loves Riot Act listening to it, and then putting on S/T and having it be so far from the band they just listened to that they can't even see the songs for what they are.

What that form was, or when, is what I'm wondering.

Let's rename the album and track names using bowl movements, and then rank 'em.EJ wrote:The form of a solid, and ropelike dung. The stools were pretty loose there for the past couple of releases.dimejinky99 wrote:LB is a return to form.
