U2 realised years before everyone else that touring was where the money is.

Nah. Zeppelin blew the doors off of big scale arena jetset tours, but it was bands like the Stones, promoters like Michael Cohl (who later worked with U2), and CD remastering that really woke everybody up to the untapped financial potential of baby boomer nostalgia....and subsequently to the impossible financial potential of big high profile tours (with ever more sponsorship, and ever-upward nudging seat prices).

Aging, now-professional audiences with middle level income or better are very much the bread and butter of live performance. It's been a trend among popular rock bands for decades, but now it's even seeping into the (poorly labelled) "indie" market.

Really, though, I agree with the gist of your gab. If you went back in time to 1992, and told me that U2 was going to be end up being exactly as pompous and self-adoring as they were then cheekily pretending to be, and that Pearl Jam would become essentially a corporate entity living on easy nostalgia, corporate deals, and safety records, I would never have believed it. I hope. Or maybe I just would have become a cynical jerk that much sooner.

Also, sidenote: I took a random spin through ATYCLB the other day. What a frustrating album. Starts off so promising, but it slowly and steadily falls apart.

Maybe I'm just being sentimental, but ATYCLB is a beautiful album front to back... I revisited it a few weeks back, and it still holds up rather nicely imo.

Sell me on some of the later tracks? I've only heard the back half of the record a few times. Overall, I adore the production. Surprisingly simple and undramatic, all things considered.

That simplicity was a breath of fresh air for me at the time...

Obviously Grace sticks out for me as a nice, soft ender with pretty metaphors and double meaning. Love everything about it. Actually, looking at the tracklist, all of the last four songs (and a few others) resonate with stages of grief I associate with 9/11. Then there's the whimsical Wild Honey which is like nothing they've ever done before imo. In a Little While reminds me of the passing of Johnny Ramone (or was it Joey) and asking for it to be played while on his deathbed. Like I said before... It's a very heartfelt, almost a snapshot of the times ... the turn of the century... a turning point for the band, too.

I love Joshua Tree and the Actung Baby - Atomic Bomb Years. ZooTv and Pop Mart are two of the greatest tours of all time. And those DVDs are fucking awesome too.

I really like modern U2. Even from albums i dont care like ATYCLB, i know there is going to be at least 2 songs ill be crazy about...both How To Dismantle and No Line are amazing records.
The last one has at least 4 songs im crazy bout....so yeah, i want the new one. So far the only song i thought it was great was The Blackout.

Looking forward to the new one as I enjoyed the last album. There were a pretty good 6-7 tracks on it.
