10 miles in 68 minutes
That's fucking it! Training done. Now just 5 miles a day and a shitload of carbs between now and the race. Even split. Just kinda cruised. Beautiful AZ evening with a huge moon.
I'm now thinking about rim to rim to rim at The Grand Canyon instead of just rim to rim.
Streak: 78

So, wife and I had to drive to DC separately due to work. She got to the armory to pick up our registration at 6:57:30, sprinting with two and a half minutes to go. I left work at 5 and got in at 11, helluva drive. Anyway, took the Metro in to downtown DC with a bunch of other runners. They added extra service opening two hours early, so this was definitely preferable over driving.
Gear checked and vacated some liquids, got corraled after the line was moving. Man, it is something to see twenty-five thousand plus people moving in one direction. Windy and ocvercast to begin. Got off to a solid start, really hit a nice stride around three miles. Solid views of the monuments and surrounding area, the Potomac River but that was gone after six miles, then it was just the Washington DC we all know exists. Fair amount of people out to cheer along and a large police presence for all crossing roads. RFK Stadium was probably chosen because 25K people in one spot is a a shitload of people to just end up somewhere. About 60 or so degrees and sunny at the end, great running weather. DC is now getting hit with snow.
Wife and I began, ran and finished the race together. She'll be working on her speed as with even these technically being my first road miles I was quicker. We're both looking forward to our next half in May, both for being closer (Providence) and also smaller participant wise. But beyond that I am really looking forward to my training hikes starting the 29th.

Nice work, friend.
I have mixed feelings on "Rock 'n' Roll" events. On one hand, there are a shitton of people and mediocre courses. And on the other hand, the after-race stuff is usually pretty cool (Rock 'n' Roll Arizona had The Joy Formidable this year) and they seem to be pretty well managed (with the massive exception of the tainted water at the first Las Vegas event).

Re: The running/exercise streak thread
I would definitely say I was happy with the organization of the event, as well as the plethora of stuff at the end and the concert was a nice touch. The Head and the Heart are a good size name at the moment. Can't forget the free Mich Ultra after either.turned2black wrote:Nice work, friend.

However, the performers every mile seemed unnecessary especially since I ran with one earbud in and was pretty keyed in to the music a lot of the time. The water stations were well stocked with Gatorade and water every 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 miles and also a big GU hand-out at mile nine, really just in time for myself and I'd never had the stuff before.
I did have to run around a lot of people, which I'm sure happens at every running event but like I said, I'm looking forward to the smaller weekends at Providence, Jamestown and Newport.

Late run. Even split. Still feeling a little anxious about the race. I recognized a name in the results from a past race as a local sub-2:50 marathoner. He finished his death march in just over 6 hours. Fuck.

5 miles in 34 minutes + Yoga
Hit the treadmill at the gym last night. It was crazy busy. Treadmill was mellow and I just cruised. I was gonna leave, but noticed a yoga class was starting. The instructor waived my "drop-in" fee and I started. I was the only dude, but luckily I'm a post-vasectomy 40-year-old who no longer really cares about hot women in yoga pants. The yoga kicked my fucking ass and now I'm a little concerned about how much effort I put into the class during a taper week. I'm pretty wiped out today and my quads are sore.
Just 5 miles for the rest of the week.

I will refrain from making that my signature but nice work.
You'll be back to regular mileage right after your death march... really, though that statement sounds like I'm kidding.

Ran on the indoor track. Felt fantastic. I couldn't be bothered to count laps, but I was probably doing sub 6:30s. Did some core work afterward. Getting the pre-race tingle in my legs.

I need new shoes, brother. Been getting back into it, and the snow is finally threatening to melt. Any suggestions? I've been running in Nike Free Runs, which is probably dumb since I had stress fractures a couple years back, but I like the lightness and closeness to the ground.turned2black wrote:X miles in 40 minutes

Work treadmill. Even split. My boss and I actually had a meeting while I was running.
Now watching Touching the Void on repeat, a pre-race ritual that I started several years ago. Watching Joe Simpson crawl down that mountain with a shattered leg makes me want to run until I die.
Streak: 83
I'm currently wearing the New Balance Fresh Foam 890s. I bought them because I knew the impact from running with a 35-pound pack would be brutal on my knees. I love them and will keep running in them after my race. ~8.5 ounces and 4mm drop.
You may have a hard time finding the 1600s in a store to test out, but the Fresh Foams are everywhere.

20th: 3 miles on the treadmill
21st: Supersets. Had to squeeze these in at work because I knew that after being shorthanded at work for the entire week I would be useless when I got home.
Streak: 77
I have been very happy with my shoe selection, New Balance 890v4.

22nd: Some number of miles hiked with the pups.
23rd: Six miles run on the road; temp crept over freezing so felt it wise to get out with the threat of more snow mid-week.
Streak: 79
t2b, prepping for my hike I'm going to have some training on weekends so I'll be adjusting my initial streak bar to reflect hiking as opposed to just running. No mileage necessary since all the training hikes I believe are around or over ten.
