There's also no reason to think that the numbers would not have continued to decline. 2003 is 11 years ago. You can see this on this board. If you think a band is past their glory days (as MANY people did in that era), there is only a finite amount of time where the memory of what they were to you will keep you interested in who they are right now. It could be that the decisions they've made are necessary to keep them at the place they want to be.

Well, I can't prove a negative, so you're right about that. No one can prove anything about anything in this conversation. What I'm saying is that PJ is right now about where they have been for over 15 years, and there's been no massive uptick in sales, or uptick in concert attendance, or drastic upswing in critical acclaim, or really anything that proves that the decisions they made have changed their standing. So either they somehow became much more commercial and outgoing to end up in the same place they've always been, or perhaps they've just occupied a firm, solid foundation for nearly two decades.

I just want the songs to stop sucking. I don't fucking care what they sound like.

I think in general there's always far too much conversation about people's neuroses or their biases or whatever in these conversations. I think for most people here that are critical, it is as simple as you put it.

Yeah. I mean, I get that there's some oversimplification here, but a lot of people act like the reason some of us don't like the new material is based on some sort of principle of what these songs "are" or "aren't." If it seems that way, it's because people are trying to figure out why the material they're coming up with isn't striking them as good anymore, not because coming up with the material in that manner is necessary to an enjoyable finished product.

All that being said, most of us don't need the songs to be in a specific style. They had great rockers, introspective slow-burners, thinly-veiled pop gems, off-kilter "experiments," lengthy mood pieces, and quirky barn-burners at the height of their powers. As long as what they're doing is good, (most) people here will respond accordingly.

i guess i'm late to the party funeral but i'm quite shocked and i'm anticipating some very embarrassing moments when this wimpy song airs. this has nothing to do with Pearl Jam, this song isn't from the same band i fell in love with. they're probably hoping for another crossover hit but this isn't what this band used to be about. Sirens and now this abomination as singles...it's getting harder to follow those guys.
