why is it so important that every television show has a fully-realized female character (btw I think this show had a good one)? Why does everything have to appeal to everyone? Why is it bad that a show might appeal primarily to men? Goddamn feminists, you have all kinds of shit, including grey's anatomy, and it doesn't bother me at all. live and let die, bitches.

Okay.
1. The Wire
2. The Sopranos
3. Game of Thrones
4. Mad Men
5. Breaking Bad
6. LOST
7. Battlestar Galactica
8. Louis
9. Six Feet Under
10. Friday Night Lights
11. The X-Files
12. Broadchurch
13. Top of the Lake

Those are the absolutes. I'd also put:

1. Girls
2. New Girl
3. Cheers
4. I Love Lucy
5. Friends
6. The Office
7. Parks & Recreation
8. How I Met Your Mother

Above it also. But those are much more subjective. And we'll have to see what subsequent seasons prove.

Homicide life on the street is missing from your list. Im sure it''s omission was an honest mistake.

Also, while we're at it, the second season of Grey's Anatomy is better than the first season of True Detective.

It comes only from ignorance. As soon as I watch it, I'm sure I'll include it.

And those that don't do shit, like Lenny. And me after three bowls of chili.

Well, of course you think so. I'll tell you what, just keep the first five and I'll still stand by it. TD is a fine show, but it's got nothing on the best of the best in TV history.

Even with your rampant (clearly shock-laden) misogyny, I can't believe you'd side with Dev. If your issue is really, honestly, truly, "people bitch and complain" I feel sorry for you. Your myopathy is startling and scary. But I know it's you just being an internet poster and that's why I can shrug and laugh and go watch Tree of Life.

it's possible The Wire is great, I haven't seen it. However, I did watch the last 3 seasons of Breaking Bad, and I could take it or leave it. The cinematography/pacing in TD is on another level, same with the story and characters when it comes right down to it.

If we're talking about just one season type shows:
1. Broadchurch
2. Top of the Lake

are both superior. Absolutely. I'd say the first season of Breaking Bad, Mad Men and LOST are all better than the first season of TD. Now it's possible that the show will change my mind as it goes on. But there's a lot lacking in TD, I think.

I reject the idea that "a fully-realized female character" and "appeal to everyone" are mutually exclusive.

Here we go again with the stupid misogyny label. No, joe, it just gets fucking annoying sometimes when you inadvertently stumble upon complaints that showcase nothing but people's need for attention.

Malala Yousafzai's story (just an example) is a struggle worth writing about. Not some female journalist who was disgusted by the portrayal of women in TD.

This criticism goes far beyond "people's need for attention." It's your inability to recognize that that shocks and bothers me.

When you question this writer's plot point, then you question Rust Cohle's decision making. You just don't do that.
pretty sure I have considered lines of reasoning like this in the past. But, right now it makes absolutely no sense to me. Why, couldn't I enjoy parts of the writers work but dislike others?
You could and should. Orson is being unreasonable. Or funny. Sometimes it's hard to tell with him.

sure, but it's all pretty relative, deciding which minorities must be included and which don't need to be, unless you try to represent everyone. Trying to represent everyone is a pretty pointless endeavour anyway, which probably in the majority of instances creates a watered down product. Everyone has idiosyncratic interests, and all products/tv shows appeal to specific demographics. There is nothing wrong with a particular demographic having a cathartic experience with a particular tv show, as long as that show doesn't explicitly promote some kind of discrimination. Discrimination against women is a real thing, but suggesting that anything that appeals primarily to men promotes that discrimination is a huge mistake.
