It doesnt even fit. It just seems as though some idiot PJ fan dubbed Ledbetter over their favorite scenes of friends. So out of place.

Ed probably agreed that it didnt fit and that is when he decided he needed to write songs for bad tv shows :(. Now we get just breath, the end, future days etc...

Really though has Eddie always been a greedy self obsessed turd all along? Looking back on his public image going back to the early nineties, he arrived on that scene as this aloof surfer dude and quickly became the poster boy for angst. When I see pics of him frowning and glaring at the camera it looks so contrived, and the stories of having a suitcase of bills in school and worrying about that turned out to be a load of bull. Following this through to marrying a supermodel and his starfucking social calendar, it seems like the plan was to build the fan base at a comfortable rate but to ultimately exploit it. I think pj20 really showed the propaganda with glossing over drummer issue (something in fairness to grohl they didn't do in the foo movie around the same time) but that clip of him dancing with Kurt is so conceited.

I used to be a big fan but for a frontman to point fingers at injustice, he has to be held up that standard of integrity that he expected of others. If you're writing a pop song for people to dance to, we don't expect you to fly the flag. You don't have an expectation of us and we don't have for you. And I know people will say 'well good for him' or 'he doesn't care what u or anyone else thinks', but authenticity and honesty do stand for something in this world. And look maybe he is doing a deal with devil saying 'you can't beat them join them' and takes some corporate sponsorship and spreads it somewhere worthwhile, then that's great. But it seems he is enthralled with this cult of stardom and rock and roll hall of fame nonsense, which brings me back to the scene with Kurt in the movie, he is solidifying himself in this myth which for a real living person is more or less giving up as an artist. It's like he believes in this terrible martyrdom cult that was built around Kurt because it doesn't look like he really believes in the integrity or ethos of the man.

I'm saying this a person that used to follow his example through the bands music, ethos and even charity work, and I'm sad that this is how I see him now. I have become cynical about the band, and worse it's this murky feeling that the good guys not just sold out (whatever that means today when we are trying to get by in the world), not admitting defeat but were always just out for their legacy and used genuine connection and appreciation and took advantage. I don't claim to know the people and am going on my own observation but these developments have left me with an uneasy feeling

NME - 5-13-00 wrote:"Soon Forget" on "Binaural" is even more lyrically brutal, as Vedder, bizarrely accompanied only by himself on ukulele, paints a withering portrait of a lonely millionaire. "Lying dead, clutching benjamins". "he's stiffening...we're all whistling" he croons, never having sounded happier. It's a fantastically nasty song. "I think its a good little movie," he laughs. "It's a kind of Bill Gates thing, I think. But it could be anyone or anything."

You specifically had Bill Gates in mind when you wrote it?

"Someone like that."

Would you like to see Bill Gates dead? -- there is an epic pause, even by his standards, then he brightens: "Uh, immobilised" -- just take his kneecaps out? -- "I'd like to see. Maybe it's already happened -- I don't know what's going on in his personal life. But I think a guy like that could do some really interesting things if he had an epiphany -- maybe because of the loss of his kneecaps," he giggles mischievously: "but it's amazing what he could do."

You could argue the sentiments of that song could be levelled at you.

"Oh yeah, oh yeah, I'm in there too. It just shows that I'm thinking about it and saying, ‘make sure you don't turn out like that.' I mean its good for me to hear this stuff too."

Do you want to be remembered? You say the character in the song will soon be forgotten. He's nothing, he's dust.

"I'd just like to be remembered as the guy whistling, y'know? By the people who are dancing, and not counting the money. Err, sure I'd like to be remembered. But as someone who – I've never really thought about this -- as someone who likes to dance."

I'm sorry. I've been grading papers all day and am in a shitty mood. Please carry on impugning the integrity of someone who can no longer care about injustice or dislike corporations because he has money, or negating the value of political contributions, charitable work, and attention raised for all sorts of causes because they played a private show.

Soon Forget sucks. I never got the Bill Gates thing. Doesn't he give a ton to charity and plans to give almost all of it away when he kicks. I don't even think his kids are getting much.

It does, and you are correct about Bill Gates. A lot of his charities probably do more harm than good (he's helping to destroy the American education system), but his heart is probably in the right place.

If Eddie equated your personal wealth with your moral worth in 2000 then the problem is that eddie was a fucking idiot then, not that he was a hypocrite today.

What matters with wealth (in terms of moral critique) is what you had to do to get it and who or what is harmed in the process. What also matters is the way in which the institutional structures that define political and economic life rig the game and whether or not you are working to either help alleviate the worst consequences of the rigging, or actively working to change the rules themselves.

The rest is just image and advertising and marketing and transference.
