Re: The March Madness Tournament Thread
This has been a lot of fun so far, but I'm hoping we can make a thread after it's all over suggesting changes for next year's tournament. If I could suggest four things:
1. Eliminate all non-album songs that couldn't muster 10 votes in the first round. This would leave us with more meaningful early matches, I think, and would get rid of songs like: Sweet Lew (Demo), Gone (Demo), Don't Believe In X-Mas, Wishing Well, Thunderclap, Foldback, Harmony, etc...If you want everything to participate, do some "play-in" polls where you only pick the 4 best of these songs or something to get into the actual tournament.
2. Include live covers! Seeing how far songs like Rockin' in the Free World, Crown of Thorns, or Baba O'Riley could go is more interesting, I think, than seeing The Real Thing get shut out in the first round.
3. Have a play-in poll to let some side-project band songs in. A poll for Eddie's songs, Brad songs, Jeff solo songs, etc.
4. No random seeding: figure out a 1-2?? ranking based on the results of this tournament. I'd be willing to compile this; hey, I've got a year!

Re: The March Madness Tournament Thread
What if we took the worst performing songs of this tournament and made a worst Pearl Jam song bracket?
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

It should also be stated that the mods talked about 1-3. People should weigh in now if they have opinions, and make stip take notes.stip wrote:All possibilities, and 4 in particular would be great.the issue is fitting it all into a tournament structure with as few byes as possibleSimple Torture wrote:This has been a lot of fun so far, but I'm hoping we can make a thread after it's all over suggesting changes for next year's tournament. Re: The March Madness Tournament Thread
With regards to #3, "Setting Forth" would make a lot of sense... since the band has included it into their live sets.

1. I would be fine with eliminated demos/sketches. But not all non-album tracks. I'm thinking specifically of songs like Sunburn and Angel which have a decent following. Those songs belong in this tourney. But the Gone demo and Foldback, etc, I'm fine letting those go.
2. I'm opposed to including covers at all -- live or studio. But I know that's mostly just me.
3. There's probably a good argument to be made here. I'm sure someone could talk me into it, but on the surface, I don't like it. Keep it to songs released/recorded as Pearl Jam.
4. No random seeding is a must.

Re: The March Madness Tournament Thread
The more I think about random seeding, the more it makes sense: it allows for more close early-round match-ups, more of a possibility that a "heavyweight" could get eliminated early.
If you're interested, here are the songs that got fewer than 10 votes in Round 1:
Falling Down
Whale Song
Rock Around Barack
Stupid Mop
Thunderclap
Need To Know
Just A Girl
Anything In Between
Arc
Ole
Sweet Lew
Chinese
Foldback
Gone (Demo)
Future Days
Santa God
Red Dot
Sweet Lew (Demo)
Evil Little Goat
Devil Doll
Hitchhiker
Santa Cruz
It Ain't Like That
Jingle Bells
Turning Mist
I Just Want To Have Something To Do
Wishing Well
Don't Believe in Xmas
The Real Thing

Do I really want to post in a Pearl Jam message board where I don't get to vote against Turning Mist?

I'd leave whale song, future days, and hitchhiker because they had formal studio releases.
The problem with the more restrictive list is making a tournament structure work that isn't riddled with byes.

Is a bye really worse than voting for Gone and Gone (demo) in the same tournament?
