I'm kinda onboard with a lot of stip's points here but there is no way that I want people to not post what they think, regardless of their opinion. Shit, disagreeing is half the fun.

I don't feel that there is particular bullying of new posters, well, no more than the bullying of old posters, but I can see that it would take a degree of...effort perhaps to hang in there and keep on posting if you were a more pit-esque PJ fan. But in the end if you did stick around you're opinion would be just as worthwhile and valuable as anyone else's.

I don't agree with everyone in this thread, of course I don't. I still value the posts and enjoy reading them and either nodding my head or chuckling in amazement. Whatever - like platy said above, it's all just stupid shit and shouldn't be taken too seriously.

I said before that I really haven't got that much emotionally invested in PJ, and I don't. I still like the band and their music though. Its the posters and cheap thrills that keep me coming back to RM.

Nobody wants that. But the omnipresent ripping or criticism about the band is just as boring to read. He it about any topic. Sound quality of boots, financial motivations/changing of positions, and fall off of quality of output/live shows.
Gets a bit much.

All joking aside, part of it for me is this:

My mother heads a local chapter of the parrot head club (they have chapters....chapters). My uncle has been a level XII kiss fan since before I was born. So I've seen a lot of how these fanbases talk and think. And I'm not exaggerating in the least to say I can find zero difference between the unquestioning worship and ridiculous praise they heap upon their respective heroes and the stuff that often defines the PJ community (well, there is less melodramatic weeping shit there, so maybe they are one up on us). But oftentimes, you could just swap out a few names and titles and leave entire conversations intact, transplanting them verbatim from one group to the next.

I like that there's a portion of Pearl Jam's fanbase that isn't just blindly along for the ride. It makes me respect the band a little more to have cultivated that unwillingness to compromise. I find no value in the alternative...it has less of a sense of humor, less inherent optimism about the potential of music or art, and it's realllllllly out of touch sometimes.

I once listened to a Springsteen fan basically say outright that Springsteen had invented the backbeat. And all the Springsteen clubbers around them nodded and agreed, because no one was around to laugh about it.

The funny thing is, I sometimes see RM as the reverse mirror image of that scenario. A lot of like-minded people sort of jerking themselves off about how clearly the band is over the hill. Between this and the Pit, "there ain't gonna be a middle anymore..."

Stip remains a complete, unabashed, fan-boy to the most extreme possible. Here’s some of my favorites from his ridiculous posts on this one issue (salesforce):

The interesting thing about some of these posts is the way they approach an almost 'stalking my ex' level of creepy intensity.

How do other artists confronting the same industry shifts see pearl jam? You don't hear many musicians criticizing them. That seems significant

Newsflash, stip. I'm a PJ fan, and even I'd admit... no one is talking about Pearl Jam at all. So, that's probably why you aren't hearing this. No one, outside of places like this, cares. Not sure anyone really cares here anymore either...

I think that's basically what RM (or pearl jam chat, anyway) has become. There are exceptions, but they're exceptions rather than the rule. If I wasn't already invested in this place and most of the people in it there is no way I would have started posting here. It took years of work from a lot of people to turn this into a really intelligent forum. And it's a shame that this is where it's ended up.

I really don't see that stip gets particularly "frustrated" at all. To me he just joins in the conversation and posts his own opinion of things, usually in a quite considered and reasonable manner. Considering the shit he gets I think he does exceedingly well to be honest.

His taste in PJ tunes though, now that's a total other thing...
