What about including some of the well regarded improvs? A bunch that I'd personally choose over their actual studio songs. Maybe have some kind of nomination period ahead of time.

I don't know.

Personally I'd rather flesh it out with Eddie solo tracks, but I don't want team moonlander to get upset.

All I wanted to do was have a tournament where every single pearl jam song ever was included, and I forgot Cready Stomp. So no matter what this year is a failure.

Fun fact! The following songs had byes and didn't even make it out of Round 2 (percentage of the vote they received in their match in parentheses):

Marker In The Sand (49.41%)
Animal (48.86%)
Pendulum (45.45%)
Can't Keep (44.71%)
Force of Nature (36.71%)
Johnny Guitar (32.89%)
Yellow Moon (30.68%)
My Father's Son (24.39%)

the byes came from the top 3 vote getters from each record in those ranking threads from a few months back. Next year, if you compile the data, we can seed based on performance this year.

I rep random seeding a thousand times over. Basing next year's tournament on the results from this year would just stack the deck in favor of the heavyweights and the Cinderellas would never even make it to the ball. Who wants a March Madness without any madness?

Agreed. The random seeding gives the tournament a bit of unpredictability. I would imagine the same 6-8 songs would make it every year otherwise.

Ya, you get some unfortunate early round match ups this way, and some songs make it further than they should, but the consensus favorite should still win out in the end and the process is more exciting.

Simple Torture wrote:This has been a lot of fun so far, but I'm hoping we can make a thread after it's all over suggesting changes for next year's tournament. If I could suggest four things:

1. Eliminate all non-album songs that couldn't muster 10 votes in the first round. This would leave us with more meaningful early matches, I think, and would get rid of songs like: Sweet Lew (Demo), Gone (Demo), Don't Believe In X-Mas, Wishing Well, Thunderclap, Foldback, Harmony, etc...If you want everything to participate, do some "play-in" polls where you only pick the 4 best of these songs or something to get into the actual tournament.

2. Include live covers! Seeing how far songs like Rockin' in the Free World, Crown of Thorns, or Baba O'Riley could go is more interesting, I think, than seeing The Real Thing get shut out in the first round.

3. Have a play-in poll to let some side-project band songs in. A poll for Eddie's songs, Brad songs, Jeff solo songs, etc.

4. No random seeding: figure out a 1-2?? ranking based on the results of this tournament. I'd be willing to compile this; hey, I've got a year!
All possibilities, and 4 in particular would be great.the issue is fitting it all into a tournament structure with as few byes as possible
It should also be stated that the mods talked about 1-3. People should weigh in now if they have opinions, and make stip take notes.
1. agree
2,3,4 not so much

Agreed.

I don't have much to suggest but:

- Random seeding, please.
- Keep this format, it's been fun.
- I think only album tracks, official b-sides and other notable studio recordings (eg. Sunburn) should be included. No live songs, no demos, no covers apart from those included on the above releases (eg. Crazy Mary, Last Kiss, etc.)

If we're having too many byes we could try a group stage like in the world cup. X number of songs per group, they all go head to head and the top 2 or 3 (or however many) go through to the main tournament.
