my theory about harry lime is that he was rejected by a girl in grade school and never learned how to tolerate rejection, so that sense of inadequacy has transformed over time, exponentially increasing in despair and severity to the point that there is a monstrous lonely darkness reaching its tendrils though his super-ego, ego, and id, rendering him emotionally and spiritually paralyzed in the moment at which the rejection first occurred.
