Re: Neutral Milk Hotel
I lump it together in my mind with Mad Season's Above, Bon Iver's For Emma, and The Postal Service. Not in terms of overall quality or impact or anything, but those are records that to me just exist as a moment in time. Those albums are examples of circumstances and the will of the universe just working perfectly to make a singular thing. They're not albums that should be considered relative to their peers or within the scope of an artist's discography.
In fact, I really wish Bon Iver never made a second record for this reason.

I don't think there has been another Kevin Davis post in my lifetime so profoundly mystifying to me.Kevin Davis wrote:I don't think there has been another record released in my lifetime whose appeal is so profoundly mystifying to me.

Apparently every lyric on this record has 452 different meanings so are you so sure that it doesn't?McParadigm wrote:If only it mentioned PeoriaKevin Davis wrote:I don't think there has been another record released in my lifetime whose appeal is so profoundly mystifying to me.

What a low brow and pathetic individual you must be to have missed the last and most important one. I bet you don't even have a beard.

Makes total sense to me. And I completely agree. And it's the reason I kinda hope NMH never releases another record.cutuphalfdead wrote:I was hoping that made sense.durdencommatyler wrote:cutuphalfdead wrote:I lump it together in my mind with Mad Season's Above, Bon Iver's For Emma, and The Postal Service. Because Lightning Bolt was such a transcendent moment in which the universe aligned to create a singular burst of organized noise that the five mere humans in the band were helpless to stop?

They're a big part of my history and I've followed them a long time so I have low expectations and really as long as there's guitars and some of the mumbling breaks into yelling I'll probably find something to cling to and feign like it's good because that's what you do when you've given up on passion and creativity and secretly ache for death.

KD's over-looking of this record makes me so mad I could eat my scarf, that I wear year round, with tight pants, and thick dark framed glasses.McParadigm wrote:453.Kevin Davis wrote:Apparently every lyric on this record has 452 different meanings so are you so sure that it doesn't?McParadigm wrote:If only it mentioned PeoriaKevin Davis wrote:I don't think there has been another record released in my lifetime whose appeal is so profoundly mystifying to me.

He didn't over-look it, he merely looked it over.

Well, no, I like it OK, it's just the overwhelming widespread acclaim that confuzzles me
