Stip, I blame you for this. You should have said you were voting for Smile.

It's the melodramatic overwroughtness of Black that knocks it down a few pegs for me.

"Now my bitter hands cradle broken glass..."

I mean, SERIOUSLY.

Is Smile winning on 'protest' votes!?

I'm assuming it is a matter of preferring to hear Smile over Black these days rather than people actually thinking it is a stronger song.
Every song match I end up using different criteria to vote - it is hard when you know a song is better but you prefer to listen to another more often.

I can understand people getting sick of hearing Black played over and over or that it has turned into a sing-a-long song live or even that they just want to let another song have a chance winning the contest. In fact I would probably prefer to listen to Smile over Black these days - but Black is definitely the stronger song and better lyrics. I enjoy Smile a lot but it isn't amongst the best songs on No Code.

In the end I don't mind either way which song wins.

Nothing against Black, but Smile is more real.

also, click this link and read the first comment and tell me this song isn't the best choice.

everyone's had that moment of utter desperate loss during a breakup. And it seems silly after the fact. But nothing feels more real at the time

That's fine if the lyrics ring true to that experience but Black's don't, at least not for me - they're so ham-fisted and cheesy, almost comically so.

I think Smile is the better song by some margin.

We were all singing along to that in Perth in 2006 as Black was tailing off and my mate looks at me, deadpan, and says "Dude - you sound like a fucking dove". Cracked me up.

If Black was released on LB, it would sound like a Shaina Twain/Bon Jovi/Coldplay mashup.

Well first let me say I am a fan of "smile". Killer tune musically.

But you are kidding complaining about the lyrics to black compared to smile. I'd be surprised if smile cracks the 100 mark for words and half of those are "Don't it make you smile" repeated a half dozen or so times - lyrical monster!

Black on the other hand is almost perfection. If you can't relate to it than that's probably a good thing. but any song with this in it:
"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star
In somebody else's sky, but why, why, why
Can't it be, can't it be mine"
Is going to hit home with a lot of people at some point or another.

Then again the sun don't shine right now and I do miss it already....
But as it is will dream of her tonight..

Yep. Pretty great lines there. Regardless of anything else, the emotion that he pulls from that little refrain is magnificent.

Champagne songwriting.
