You know, if someone had asked me to predict this stage of Pearl Jam in 2003 one of the songs I would have pointed to would have been Neil Young's Bandit.

Goddamn it.

Ugh I love that song so much.

Also, isn't the guitar tuned down like 2 steps? Fuck. So beautiful.

stip wrote:Welcome back :) I don't know that I'd take a best of from the last 3 albums over the 5 prior, but it'd be close. The strength of Backspacer and L-bolt for me is their depth more than the highs (the highs are probably just as high on the other albums). It's just that there are 5 Pearl Jam albums i'm happy to listen to from start to finish (excepting maybe supersonic), and they happen to include Lightning Bolt and Backspacer.

Hmmm, lets think about this.

Top 15 from No Code through Riot Act

1. Hail Hail
2. In My Tree
3. Red Mosquito
4. Insignificance
5. Grievance
6. Nothing As It Seems
7. Rival
8. Given to Fly
9. Wishlist
10. Do the Evolution
11. Brain of J
12. Save You
13. I am Mine
14. Can't Keep
15. Undone

Top 15 from S/T through Lightning Bolt

1. Life Wasted
2. World Wide Suicide
3. Comatose
4. Parachutes
5. Come Back
6. LROM
7. Gonna See My Friend
8. Force of Nature
9. The Fixer
10. Got some
11. Lightning Bolt
12. Infallible
13. Pendulum
14. Yellow Moon
15. Mind Your Manners.

I'm not sure. It's pretty close for me. Probably the older list is better, but there are a lot more songs I was tempted to include from the last 3.
Thanks. Been through a lot these last few months and now just about getting back to normal. Our daughter was born last year in November and around the same time, my father in-law was diagnosed with stage 4 bladder cancer. He passed away earlier this month. It's been a very tough time for the family but the little one is keeping us going.

The real high points for me from the No Code-Riot Act era, i.e. the songs which probably can't be touched by any of the post-Riot Act songs (except maybe Infallible), are basically Given To Fly and Do The Evolution. There isn't anything else on those albums which I'd put in the same ballpark as the best songs from Ten-Vitalogy. So for me personally, given that I much prefer their later material, a collection of their best songs post-Riot Act is better overall than any possible collection of songs from No Code-Riot Act.

I'm thinking Severed Hand should also be on my list.
Pearl Jam is the only band I'll spend money on.

Has anyone decided why everyone's outraged at the cheese of Future Days but were not mad when Thin Air was released?

"Thin Air" is about a bazillion times better than "Future Days" on just about every level

Thin Air is probably camembert while Future Days is Kraft Singles.

How come everyone who thinks Let the Records Play sucks doesn't also think Do the Evolution sucks?

It ruins my day that those aren't the actual word-for-word lyrics from Future Days.

I've never thought thin air was cheesy. It's got a nice old skool kinda vibe, fits in with last kiss and come back (which actually is cheeseballs, mind you) but more laid back and a little dreamy and none of the lyrics have every jumped out as particularly hideous to me, probably because I enjoy eds singing/ delivery.

Plus you know, no cheese piano.

That's one of the best lines on that entire record.
