Re: Match GC: Immortality vs. Do the Evolution
yeah. At one point DTE was a top 5 song, ahead of immortality, but it has aged a bit. Immortality is just a timeless piece of work that continues to impress me every time I put it on.

DTE is good but overrated, especially by the band. Played to death live. It's the Even Flow of Yield.

Well fuck me. These are two of my favorites. I don't know how the hell I can not vote for one of them.

Do The Evolution is the winner for me. I love Immortality, but I'm not sure I'd put it on the greatest of all time pedestal.

My gut says DTE. That is PJ rock at its fucking finest. But then there is immortality. Both of these songs are the epitome of the two sides of Pearl Jam.
Time to think.

Re: Match GC: Immortality vs. Do the Evolution
DTE is a cocky sneer slapped onto the face of an era when the band was prepared to invent. It represents something exciting to me that's long since lost.
Immortality is Vitalogy slipping a little far out into the already-dangerously deep waters of self-pity. As a standalone song, it makes me wince. It really needs the provided context to sound like anything other than a song about a guy who needs some vitamin C, a kick in the ass, and a job. But as Vitalogy's final coherent message and last successful attempt to produce before devolving into the thoughtless (if playful) half-sanity of foxymophandlemama....it's pretty great.
I vote DTE.

Re: Match GC: Immortality vs. Do the Evolution
Vitalogy really does have some moments that, out of context, start to feel like overwrought melodrama. But when you sprinkle tracks like Bugs, Satan's Bed, Aye Davanita, and mophandlemama around them, along with a few softer touches here and there in other songs, it all does start to get a little bit Hello Waterface. A hint of performance art intention starts to show up around the edges, like burn marks on paper, and that theatrical wave of the hand (as always happens) somehow makes it all feel a bit more genuine.
Point is, it can be hard to separate those songs into individual packages, and still give them the credit they deserve..

Id be happy with either winning but today I'm feeling DTE.
I've always prefered the vague improv'd immortality lyrics from the Orpheum shows to the actual lyrics.

"it's the Even Flow of Yield at this point"
Is it too late to take back this comment? DTE just came on and blew my face off. Ah yes, when in doubt just back to the studio version (which goes for about any PJ song these days). But still, not changing my vote.

This one is the hardest match so far - these would be my top two PJ tracks....
