Obviously I like the call in the Jays game because it went their way, but Thole was also straddling the plate... he was over the plate, but Cervelli clearly had a path to run home and slide directly into the plate without being impeded at all.

I agree that there's too much gray area, though.

How about using instant replay to check the count?

yeah thats definite gray area, a runner coming in full speed sees the catcher slide back over the plate, cant tell if hes in front of the plate (closer to 3rd) behind the plate (closer to the dug out) or straddling the plate till its, too late. I dont like the rule really at all, you might as well toss an orange mat out behind the plate and say the runner gets that / catcher gets the white and just make it a force play. Im glad they wanted to get rid of running over the catcher, and, catchers treating the plate like a hockey goalie... but theres just no way you can word this rule / enforce it evenly. Which I guess is why they left so much gray room, so the umpire can make the call on an individual play bases, so I guess I now like the rule? It will be interesting once more plays at the plate happen to see how it works out. Maybe teams will need to take note... Jim Joyce gives you some room to block the plate, but Fieldin Culbreth wants the catcher no where near the plate, and dont even bother asking Angel Hernandez hell just toss ya.

good thing I picked up Dee Brown to backup SS/2nd as my 2nd baseman might not be playing for awhile after that one.

He broke .300 last year for the first time since 2010 but only played 118 games.
