Mad Season - Above

When a band is but a fraction of Pearl Jam, but they aren't zero Pearl Jam.

Lanegan's contributions to the Deluxe were excellent, aside from the fact that the album was already outstanding.

also, i think the 3 lanegan tracks on the reissue didn't get enough talk around here.

Black Book of Fear and Slip Away...god. I wish Mike still played guitar like that.

No doubt delima, especially Slip Away, what an amazing track.
if mike recorded that solo around the time of the deluxe release, it's his best guitar work since...november hotel.

i feel like it was done in 96/97 though

Yeah from what I remember reading last year when the re-issue/deluxe came out, the tracks (instrumental only) were laid down around 98/99 when they were contemplating doing a second Mad Season album with Layne. So for the deluxe they dug up a few of those older tracks, remastered, and asked Mark to pen lyrics. From what I remember reading, I think they actually had a more than 3 music tracks, but Mark decided to only do vocals for three songs. I'll see if I can dig that article up later...

Agreed though, was surprised at how little Locomotive, BBOF, and Slip Away were received as I feel they stand up incredibly well to the rest of Above.

I was on first listen underwhelmed by the Lanegan tracks on the Deluxe but I've really come around. Locomotive is great.

I know I should listen more to Mad Season than I do. The current tournament in Other Bands has really helped me remember how great it is.

I'm listening to the LP right now. The extra tracks with Mark were really well done I've always thought. Black Book of Fear really hits hard at the moment.

Why did Mike stop wailing/ copping Hendrix/SRV? I miss that.
