PJ Regrets

Post by Bammer »

After travelling halfway across the country for the 2013 tour and seeing countless others in airports, bars, and hotels it got me thinking:

It would be great to have been about 5 years older to see some early shows, especially with Dave A. I see those posters for bills along with Alice In Chains and I just drool. Missing out on Dave A / pre-No Code is probably my #1 regret.

In college I went down to the Showbox with $100 in my pocket and miraculously scored a ticket for $60 from a guy whose buddy couldn't make it. Since I didn't spend the full $100 I went back the next night with $90 but a mental limit that I wouldn't pay more than $60 again. Had a chance at a ticket for $100 and could have probably talked it down to $90 but that was a lot of money for me at the time and I bailed. That ended up being the show with official DVD release. Oops.

#3 regret is more of a general thing that I realized after this last tour: For all the football away games I have traveled to (UW Huskies) I would go back and trade at least half of them for PJ road trips. I was so stupid about this through my 20's. I never really realized that football will always be there but PJ is going to retire someday and there are limited opportunities. On top of that, every PJ show is a guaranteed fantastic time whereas your football team can lose and that sours the trip.

There have been shows within reasonable driving distance that I have skipped for various reasons. Aside from the Gorge show where I was best man in a wedding, if I could go back in time and attend I would. The lost sleep driving overnight to get back to work the next day would have been worth it and realistically the $$ tradeoff is basically a pair of shoes and a couple meals out. Small sacrifices in the grand scheme.

And finally #5 ~ I have never met Ed in person or gotten his autograph. I have met Jeff, Stone, and Mike. Got their sigs along with Dave A and Matt sigs. I really don't want to have to purchase something with Ed's sig on it but I fear that's gonna have to be the case if I ever want to make it happen. I'm past the stage in my life where I'd obnoxiously pursue it even though I live about 15 miles from West Seattle. Plus I don't think he is a big fan of stalkers.

How is traveling halfway across the country for 2013-era Pearl Jam not your biggest regret?

I regret getting stuck in traffic on the drive from College Park, MD to Philadelphia in 2005 and walking in right as Ed was finishing up playing The Promised Land with Sleater-Kinney.

Hmmmm. None are big regrets.

1. Should have attended PJ20. I think I was turned off by the location. I only attended 1 show in 2011, which is unlike me. I'm not sure if I had a job scare or other monetary issues at the time.

2. Should have attended Night 1 of the Spectrum run. I would have been able to cross off Ghost and All Those Yesterday from my chaser list.

3. Should have went to Boston 3 2003. Tried to arrange the trip last minute and couldn't convince anyone to come with me. I had Hershey plans the next day and would have been as exhausted as the band. ;)

I don't regret skipping "local" shows, in fact, I regret not traveling more to see them.

I saw pearl jam instead of rem on what became (unbeknownst to me at the time) rem's last tour. That's my biggest regret.

I have 2,

1. Woke up early one morning and saw a sale for a Benaroya Hall vinyl and decided against it.

2. Same situation, Woke up early, saw they were selling PJ/Plant Katrina benefit tickets for I think $50 and decided to wait for my wife to wake up. They were sold out before she awoke.

i don't know how you can regret not being older. i was at first ave. on friday, and i spent some time, as i always do, thinking about how amazing it would have been to see pj play there in their early days, but even if i could go back in time, i couldn't change that i missed that.

i have made it a point to not miss shows i can get to for fear of regret. as a consequence, my regrets are the shows i went to that didn't do it for me. they are as follows:
seattle 2002 (tremendous nais, but otherwise boring as shit)
mt. view 2003 (can't remember which night. my only good memory is ed playing throw your arms around me pre-set one night.)
toledo 2004 (i don't fucking want to hear about it. i didn't pay to see him.)
kansas city and st. louis 2010 (i wish i had gone to cleveland instead.)

St. Louis 2010 was the last great pj show i saw! That was awesome.

That 2002 seattle was a bit of a letdown but i was heavily medicated and fat. So it could have been more to do with me.
