I think True Detective would need a few more seasons of greatness before I could put it in greatest of all time territory. Most of my favorite shows (X-Files, Breaking Bad, Friday Night Lights, The Wire) were great for years.

But in terms of just looking at it as a single season, in comparison to other seasons of shows? It's certainly up there.

I like TD over Breaking Bad, but The Wire still has the top spot.

In terms of a single season, tightly-knit narrative, it's tough to beat.

I like alot of those shows too. Breaking Bad was certainly "solid" for it's entire run, but most shows decline season by season. Mad Men, X-Files, Walking Dead, Sopranos, Homeland... all started strong and got progressively worse in my opinion (they still stand as some of my favourites however). What happens with many of those shows is that the networks want to keep the money-making-machine going at the expense of worn-out characters that can no longer sustain quality plot-lines.

The beauty in TD's awesomeness is the pace of the complex story telling and irreproachable acting that is tightly packaged into the perfect amount of "leave-you-wanting-more" episodes.

Breaking Bad was about as perfect as you're going to get for 5-season show (i'm looking at you "Fly" episode!)

True Detective is flat-out perfection.

I agree that more shows should be limited. And a lot of the good about TD is in it's short (by American TV standards) run. But it's still far from perfect within those 8 hours.

And I would argue that Mad Men, for example, has only gotten better. What makes Mad Men so phenomenal is that it hasn't fallen prey its longevity. I think a show like Mad Men, that is able to sustain such tremendous excellence over seven years, is a much more impressive feat. As you say, so few shows can do that.

True Detective isn't even the best one-off series I've seen this year.

Oh well, it's all a matter of personal taste. I find Mad Men has probably gone 2 season too long.
As for other once-offs, I can only compare to a couple of British series' that I would put in a similar category and that would be Broadchurch and The Fall which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I need to watch The Fall. It's been on my list a long time. So you would put that up there with TD & Broadchurch?

And I feel like I'm always bagging on TD. I really enjoyed it. Great show. And a very fulfilling experience.

This set-up was basically done years ago with "Nietzsche Family Circus," but this still made me giggle: http://timeisaflatcircus.tumblr.com/
