It always makes sense to avoid listening to the bands' best shows.broken iris wrote: I caught one show in 2000 and 2003 so I can't judge those years, but I never listen to boots from that era so...

The thing about the production, and Platy mentioned an opinion similar to yours earlier so it must be RM canon, is that it dulls down already boring songs... everything feels muted and overly smoothed out. Which is kinda the opposite of Binaural where the lower quality songs were improved by what Tchad Blake did. The work that BoB did on the last two albums is not good by any stretch, especially with the slower tracks, but it's garbage in - garbage out and the final sound of the albums is a good representation of where the band is today.

That seems like issue you have with the songs and the band's performances more than the production itself, though.
I think it's an okay record, probably their weakest effort overall at that stage, but it's basically a template of how I'd like a Pearl Jam to sound from a purely sonic perspective; warm, rich and textured.

In retrospect, Pearl Jam was lucky to not have to witness the post-riot act moneygrab thread.

They'd be sorely disappointed by the lack of brainstorming going on regarding the grabbing of money.

I am willing to concede that my distaste for the songs and the band's style at that time has probably shaded my view of the production on the album.

Re: Post-Riot Act Moneygrab
I think this 126 page discussion has not appropriately included one of the central opinions of my original post -
Please consider this-
The moneygrab phase began only as a result of the realization that the band could no longer make a difference in the world. I believe a conscious decision was made to tear down Ed's soap box as it was just wasted energy, and instead double down on the cash/fans that were ripe for the pickin'. The grandstanding politics have an inverse relationship to the moneygrab.

Re: Post-Riot Act Moneygrab
i rediscovered Riot Act recently and man, it's so much better than i thought. maybe it's because i'm a musician but it ended an era that opened so many possibilities for this band. they were almost prog at times on this record. the vocals are probably the weakest asset to this collection but still, they kind of fit the music. it just defies the preconcieved idea of what is Pearl Jam.broken iris wrote:Birds in Hell wrote:That seems like issue you have with the songs and the band's performances more than the production itself, though.

i have very fond memories of the time when S/T was released so i'm totally biaised in my feeling towards it but i still acknowledge that PJ had released two "difficult" albums in a row and that RA kind of tanked so they too, tried to re-capture the PJ stereotype afterwards and fought to get it back again. they went full-on "entertainment for the masses" after RA but i now find RA to be the last most artistically and intellectually entertaining album they've made.
with a few adjustments (still respecting Eddie's aging voice, better songwriting), it would have been a nice template for their subsequent releases.
oh, and the recording is absolutely fantastic. i don't think Adam Kasper is much of a producer à la BO'B - he's gonna capture what the band wants to be captured and i don't think he interferes much with the actual vision of what the album should sound like.
