I'd say So. Central Rain, Pretty Persuasion, and Second Guessing are all tracks that feel like a chore to listen to,...or clunkers

pretty persuasion and second guessing are my bottom two. Camera as well is a bit overlong. So. Central Rain is one of my all time favorites though. It, Harborcoat, Letter Never Sent, and Little America are my favorites on Reckoning.

''Camera'' is definitely the low point on ''Reckoning'' for me, but I don't think I would call it a clunker. Everything else is A+ or just below. Check out the ''Live at the Olympia'' versions of some of those tunes if you're on the fence about them--the extra precision in them compared to the studio versions might be just enough to push them over the edge for you.

I may just listen to nothing but R.E.M. when I'm driving through Georgia today. It's too bad the unplugged set is vinyl only. I guess I'll have to wait for someone to put it up on the internet.

I'm not sure that I've heard all the early records. But Pageant is easily my favorite of the earlies.

Is it really that good? R.E.M. Live from a few years earlier was really disappointing.

Oh man, night and day. ''Live at the Olympia'' is the sound of a band reinvigorated, having spent a decade experimenting with effects and textures and all of a sudden remembering how much fun it is to play rock and roll. They're in great humor the whole time, and they rip through their IRS material and deep cuts from their Warners albums with both passion and reverence--and after their first three post-Berry albums hearing them mine that body of work feels more like an exercise in creative research than a nostalgia trip. Really, it's a thing to behold.Lament wrote:Is it really that good? R.E.M. Live from a few years earlier was really disappointing.

I agree. That's a really great live album.

Clunker may have been a strong word. I just meant they bore me.Kevin Davis wrote:''Camera'' is definitely the low point on ''Reckoning'' for me, but I don't think I would call it a clunker. It's not a bad song. Like I said, I may have misused "clunker". It just doesnt seem to add much to their catalogue in terms of diversity or memorability to my ears, so it kind of blends in with a group of songs that I find very similar.Lament wrote:Damn. So. Most of you have likely heard these songs much more than I have, picking up on the more subtle differences or grown to love them more by hearing them live. I definitely can appreciate that.

I wish Pearl Jam had a record post-''Riot Act'' as spirited as ''Live at the Olympia.'' For all their dabbling in affect circa 1996-2004 or so, they always had a live career running concurrently that was more or less the same thing year after year (in terms of musical approach, anyway), so the idea that they might have this moment of clarity that would cause them to come out swinging like a 20 year-old garage band seems unlikely.cutuphalfdead wrote:sounds like stip describing post riot act Pearl JamKevin Davis wrote:the sound of a band reinvigorated, having spent a decade experimenting with effects and textures and all of a sudden remembering how much fun it is to play rock and roll.
