I don't understand why the internet is so freaked out by/upset at the rape scene. I don't get why it's getting so much press.

i don't know that i agree, but think it's to do with it being casually acceptable within the series?
they changed it in the same way they changed daenerys targaryen's wedding night sex from consensual to rape.

but seriously, I had a problem with the fact that they knowingly changed it from consensual to rape in both instances, but apparently this is the world that the show is trying to present. I don't think depicting rape means they are glorifying it, but it is some serious character assassination for Jamie who was trending upwards a lot since losing his hand.

I think it's irresponsible for the media to try and force feed that narrative. What makes people think "that's what the male demographic wants?" They are playing a dangerous game and I'm not sure why. The show has never glorified rape. Nor has a rape scene been the least bit titillating.

Maybe with the first have of this season, there trying to show Jamie going back to his old ways, going back to the guard, getting a fake hand, raping his twin sister. With the next epsiode being call the oathkeeper, maybe Jamie realizes he can't be the same person he is because losing his hand and all his experiences during the war of five kings changed him.

Yeah, but even the AV Club admitted that even though they didn't agree with the change from consensual to rape, they thought it was done well.

i watched both scenes without either outrage or fascination - they both appeared appropriate in the universe of the story. the basic idea throughout is women are of little value other than as fuck holes, even the powerful ones that are smart, articulate, charismatic, and either already rule the land or probably will someday.
I don't have a problem with that either. it's perfectly within the context of the show, and none of those seeming incongruities were bothersome to watch - maybe it's just a slight exaggeration on how the world is so isn't that shocking to see played out in that manner?

they don't need rape for him to realize this. When Joff was looking at the White Book of the past members of the Kingsguard and he mentions Ser Arthur Dayne and Ser Duncan the Tall and how someone "must've forgotten" to write down all of Jamie's great deeds, the look n Jamie's face says it all. They've already established a decent catalyst for him to change.

[Simple Torture]

I thought that episode had some excellent scenes; I especially liked Tywin's conversations with both Tommen and Oberyn. The first one reminded me of Varys's comments about how he serves "the realm," and how that makes him everything else negotiable. Tywin only serves his name and his legacy, and since Joffrey isn't any good for that anymore, he goes all in on Tommen while Joff's body is probably still warm.
