As stated in the OP, I wanted this thread to be "Pearl Jam fan opinions you legitimately can't understand", not just "Pearl Jam fan opinions you disagree with." The latter is a really boring conversation to have for the umpteenth time.

At the risk of sounding like a gigantic dickhead, I merely meant (and I'm sure you're well aware) that using somewhat exaggerated language is pretty commonplace when discussing things on the internet. You needled SNC for saying something was "sickening" the other day, this felt like a similar situation: no, SNC probably wasn't literally vomiting about whatever was being discussed, but that's hardly a flaw in his expression. If someone were to say they found Pearl Jam doing a Target ad "repulsive", for example, are they being disingenuous because they aren't, in truth, physically repulsed by the idea? It becomes absurd.

Anyway, in regards to the topic at hand, while of course I understand the reasons why, it just seems kind of odd to me. Is anyone genuinely happy that new episodes of The Simpsons are still going to air?

Right, but the thread is titled "Pearl Jam fan opinions that vex you", and it attempts to be a discussion about genuinely confusing opinions held by Pearl Jam fans; therefore, within the context of the thread, it's not absurd to interpret your post decrying something as "baffling" as an example you're offering of what was stated in the OP. Don't explain hyperbole to me.

I can't believe a thread would go off in a direction not originally intended by the OP. That's fucking craziness.

I was offering it an as example, it wasn't a general beef I have with the Pearl Jam fanbase. I do find it genuinely weird. I understand it, that hardly makes it less strange.

BAFFLING, EVEN.

Sorry. I misunderstood. Here are mine.

1. The only music worth listening to is bands and artists who have direct links to Pearl Jam.

2. "Every track on Ten is great."

3. "The band went downhill with Vitalogy and thereafter."

4. "Ed didn't make any effort with the Riot Act vocals."

5. "Binaural would have been their best album if the tracklisting was changed"

6. "What's wrong with being a wedding band for an Oracle networking event? The band can do what they want."

7. "Backspacer didn't make me throw up a little in my mouth the first time I heard it."
While a Western guitar motif lost on the swings drum bass fusion, get your own thoughts into the subconscious often forgotten. "Pendulum" is a sweeping soul from the ballast.

I'm sure there are some, but I feel like I understand where people are coming from most of the time, even when I disagree with them.

I suffer from new album excitement and think it's totally understandable.

What I find confusing, and maybe it's the fans I've been around the last 20 years or so, but save for the time Vs. came out in 1993, there's been a tremendous fan backlash against the album that immediately preceded a new release. I remember people openly complaining about Vs. before Vitalogy came out hopeing for another Ten, openly complaining about the filler in Vitalogy before No Code, openly complaining about their records no longer rocking before Yield...and the list goes on and on. Why can't we just keep liking an album? Surely, once the new album has been cycled through, the love for the hated album comes back and its remembered as a classic. Such a weird cycle.

I, myself, am making it my mission to reignite the love for s/t...though admittedly I never stopped liking it from the outset.

It is an interesting phenomenon. However, I don't think there was ever any backlash for Yield when Binaural came out.

I don't remember one either actually. Though I had one former Pearl Jam fan friend about 5 years ago tell me she thought Yield was the worst album she ever heard with me repeating YIELD!? YIELD!? Are you sure about that!? for a good few hours.

Will wrote:I get annoyed when I see people type out "Eddie is God" on other boards or in the comment sections below PJ-related stories. Incorrect. No, that distinction would be reserved for S.C. Gossard.
I find it the "McCready is God" statements much more troubling, especially if you really start comparing him to Gossard.

Birds in Hell wrote:Any time I've ventured a hesitant look at whatever they call the Other Bands section of the official forum, it seemed as though there wasn't a single active thread dedicated to any band that didn't: (a) include a member of Pearl Jam, (b) had supported Pearl Jam, or (c) had been mentioned by a member of Pearl Jam.
Hurry over there now and check it out. There are only a couple PJ related threads in the OM forum. That's the forum I hover around most over there and I can't think of a time when it's been overrun with side projects or PJ opening bands.

My most vexing?

"I love that version of ___________, where they fuck it up really bad, it shows they're human" No it shows they're lazy and don't really give a damn. I'm all for spontaneity and will give them a pass when it comes to being in the moment and trying something for laughs(ie Satans Bed at State College), but for the life of me I can't get over how many people celebrate shit like that.
