If we're saying where do they place among American, guitar-based, traditional rock bands, then yeah, they're top five for me.

is one or two beyond the realm of possibility for you. I'm not saying you'd place them there, but does it sound crazy?

Re: General Pearl Jam Praising
It's hard to say, cause they may be my personal favorite given that very limited definition. But beyond just my personal tastes, can I honestly say they're more significant than Nirvana, The Ramones, R.E.M., The Doors, etc.? I dunno...stip wrote:is one or two beyond the realm of possibility for you. I'm not saying you'd place them there, but does it sound crazy?

If he's not, and we're just talking about American artists from the modern (post-1950) popular music realm, I don't think Pearl Jam is even one of the 20 greatest.@SkitchP wrote:Lament wrote:If we're saying where do they place among American, guitar-based, traditional rock bands, then yeah, they're top five for me.

What if we tossed in the word "mainstream"

Re: General Pearl Jam Praising
America's popular music back catalog is just so fucking immense and amazing and filled with jaw-dropping work that the idea that Pearl Jam (no matter how much I love them) can be argued to be among the elite names just seems totally insane to me.

Re: General Pearl Jam Praising
god I hate the ramones. And I'd pretty comfortably put PJ ahead of the doors. I also stand by Nirvana as being too brief, and, if we are to believe the rumors in the Nirvana threads, they were already running low on ideas by In Utero. They'd be a top contender if you were just trying to limit your discussion to bands in their prime.Birds in Hell wrote:*waves hand excitedly*Lament wrote:can I honestly say they're more significant than Nirvana, The Ramones, R.E.M., The Doors, etc.? I would feel comfortable calling Pearl Jam one of the five most significant white, American, mainstream "Alternative" bands of the 90s, along with Nirvana, the Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails, and either RHCP or R.E.M.

Throw Out the following
Soul/Funk/R&B/Anything With Black People
Solo Artists (even if in name only)
Short Careers
Youre basically left with Pearl Jam and Aerosmith. So they're definitely top 2.

It's a damn good thing we can find ways to get rid of all the contenders.
