I believe they did this after the uprires "merged" and were no longer assigned to a league. It's still better (as in uniformity) now than it ever was.numbers wrote:They could always make their first true effort to get umpires to call the same strikezone consistently.

True. Every time they decide to try enforce a strike zone on the umpires it lasts for about 3 months and then goes back to different guys having different zones.CopperTom wrote:I believe they did this after the uprires "merged" and were no longer assigned to a league. I'm on team numbers with the strike zone. I have no problem if it changes day to day as long as it doesn't change within the game. I like how with the human element guys that are pitching well start to get a slight benefit of the doubt, and if you're not you're gonna get squeezed a little bit.

hes been doing this "routine" since he came up, someone should have stopped it then, it was CLEARLY dangerous
thats why this is making such news, he was swinging a weighted bat, IN the freaking dugout
seriously, Segura was inches away from serious injury, he could have died from that careless accident that should never have happened in the first place.
Great. While you're still busy pissing and moaning about it, I'm going to take in the sweet come back victory we had last night against the Cards.
I hope Aramis is okay

I'm on this team, too. It's frustrating when a pitcher throws a pitch a couple inches off the plate and has it called a ball, then throws the next pitch an inch or two farther off the plate and has it called a strike. Those kinds of things seem to happen all the time, and that's what the league needs to address. I have no issue with slight variances among umpires.cutuphalfdead wrote:I'm on team numbers with the strike zone. The strikezone in that Jays-Red Sox series was ridiculous. It was all over the place (in at least two of the games, I think) and completely inconsistent. (That's not meant as a complaint or an excuse, either... it was the same way for both teams. Clear strikes were called balls and pitches that weren't even close were called strikes all weekend.)

I don't think it's really that simple. If you know a particular umpire's strikezone extends two inches outside to lefthanded batter, then the pitcher can try to take advantage of that and the batter has to make adjustments. I think that's part of the strategy of the game, so I think those types of variances should remain to some extent.@SkitchP wrote:oh good, you guys are team human element.
Sure, it's the human element, but it's not the same as saying "I want to see umps screw up because it's part of the game!" I get as frustrated as anyone when that same umpire randomly decides in the seventh inning that a pitch that actually caught the corner of the plate is suddenly a ball.

I have less a problem with the ball that caught the corner and is suddenly a ball, than I do with the ball thats clearly off the plate and is suddenly a strike.philpritchard wrote:I don't think it's really that simple. Umpires will admit, sometimes a pitch fools them, a great curveball where its never a strike till the last second, will get called a ball once in awhile as the umpire is legit fooled. But the ball that was never a strike, and never crossed the plate but gets called a strike? that just shows a lack of focus and he missed the pitch.
Best ball/strike argument ive ever heard, comes from Bob Uecker
"it was one of my first at bats in the big leagues, pitch comes in and the umpire calls a strike, I asked him if he was sure? as I didnt think it was, and he says "yeah it was a strike and the next two will be too so you better swing kid" and that was the last time I questioned balls and strikes i tell ya for sure." or something along those lines Ukes the best.

What's your opinion about a catcher that is set up outside, the pitcher misses his target by a foot and half, but the pitch catches the inside corner. I've always viewed that one as a ball myself.

Re: MLB
People who complain about players getting injured are the worst.
Do you think he should just man up and play through the injury? Because, chances are, if it's severe enough for him to hit the DL, he would suck struggle while in the lineup and you would bitch and complain about how poorly he's performing. Then, when the injury gets worse and worse because he's not treating it, he'll eventually need surgery and be out a couple months instead of just 15 days, and then you'll really complain about him.

Agreed with the bold section chiefly because any strong team should be built deep enough to withstand injuries throughout the season. Especially of the 15-day DL variety. Part of the game. Best total roster wins.philpritchard wrote:People who complain about players getting injured are the worst.
