Coldplay Announces Release Date for 'Ghost Stories,' Drops New Single 'Magic'
Image

Coldplay has quietly unveiled “Magic,” the first single from their anticipated new album "Ghost Stories."

The album, the British band’s sixth, will arrive May 19 via Parlophone/Atlantic Records. Fans who pre-order "Ghost Stories" will receive an instant download of the new single, which can be streamed at youtube.com/coldplay.

News of Coldplay’s new album release comes a week after the outfit dropped the atmospheric track "Midnight" -- and its trippy clip.

"Magic," like "Midnight," is a more introspective production which veers well away from the radio-geared, stadium-rock works which helped make Coldplay a household name.

"Ghost Stories" is the Chris Martin-fronted group’s first album since 2011's "Mylo Xyloto." In August of last year, the band released "Atlas" from the soundtrack of "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire."

A deluxe edition of the "Ghost Stories" CD, featuring three bonus tracks, is available exclusively from Target at target.com/coldplay.

Coldplay will support the album with a headline slot on the opening night of the inaugural US iTunes Festival at SXSW on March 11. The performance will be streamed live and on-demand worldwide for free via the iTunes Store.

Track-Listing for "Ghost Stories":

1. Always In My Head
2. Magic
3. Ink
4. True Love
5. Midnight
6. Another's Arms
7. Oceans
8. A Sky Full Of Stars
9. O

Haha, apparently nobody wants to discuss this. I really liked "Midnight" but I'm so-so on "Magic". I can't wait to hear the album, though; MX was a disappointment to me and it seems they are pulling as much of a complete 180 as they can. I'm more interested to hear what they songs sound like in a live setting. Ever since X&Y they've usually sounded much better live than on the albums.

Case in point:

"Midnight" is truly one of the most god-awful songs I've heard from anyone. It's like a soulless, tuneless Bon Iver.

It's really weird. This band went from being a blatant Bends-era Radiohead knockoff to sounding like U2 to trying to sound like Arcade Fire to trying to be a pop band. Their constant reinvention would be admirable if the songs weren't so bad.

Yep. And the lyrics to "Magic" are so, so bad. I mean, I know Martin hasn't historically been the most competent lyricist, but yeesh.

LOL @ Midnight. But at least it reminded me that I haven't listened to For Emma in like six months. I need to remedy that.

Both songs are fantastic.
I like the vibe of these songs. While I really like Mylo I think it was time for a departure.

I thought Mylo was a disappointment after the excellent Viva la Vida. I like this newer stripped downed stuff. Looking forward to this.

With the release of Ghost Stories a little over a month away, Coldplay have lined up a series of six intimate shows around the world, two of which are in the U.S.

On May 5th, the group will play New York City's 2,900-seat Beacon Theatre, which opened in 1929 and has welcomed the likes of the Dalai Lama and the Rolling Stones over the years. And on May 19th – the day the record comes out – they'll play Royce Hall, an 1,800-seat theater on the UCLA campus that has hosted concerts by artists ranging from Frank Sinatra to Frank Zappa since its opening, also in 1929. Full Tour schedule below:

25 April - E-Werk, Cologne, Germany

05 May - Beacon Theatre, New York, USA

19 May - Royce Hall, Los Angeles, USA

28 May - Casino de Paris, Paris, France

12 June - Dome City Hall, Tokyo, Japan

01 July - Royal Albert Hall, London, UK

Tickets for the Cologne show will go on sale at 9am CET on Saturday, 19 April from eventim.de/coldplay.

Ghost Stories will be released worldwide on Monday, 19 May.

I am a Coldplay fan, however from what I'm hearing of this new album, it's doubtful that it will be better than Mylo Xyloto.
