Pretty much this. So, here's what I've got so far. I doubt it's anything mind-blowing, I just hope it gets someone hot.philpritchard wrote:This is really, really hard. Because I'm relatively new to REM, I find my favourites are still constantly changing as I continue to discover songs that had never really stood out to me before.
Murmur: Talk About the Passion, 9-9
Reckoning: Harborcoat, 7 Chinese Bros.
Fables of the Reconstruction: Green Grow the Rushes, Life and How to Live It
Life's Rich Pageant: Begin the Begin, What if We Give it Away
Document: Finest Worksong, The One I Love
Green: Orange Crush, You Are the Everything
Out of Time: Losing My Religion, Country Feedback
Automatic for the People: The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight, Man on the Moon (this one really hurt to only pick 2)
Monster: I Took Your Name, You
New Adventures in Hi Fi: Leave, Be Mine

I believe it. I agree that Monty is likely the low point and it's not a bad song at all. Everything is good to great to incredible.stip wrote:Sidewinder was a favorite for a long time. Almost every song on automatic has been

Almost every rem album has songs as good as the best stuff on automatic. No album can match the sheer number of outstanding songs.
Fun fact- they were apparently intending to write a loud, Monster type record when they went into the studio for automatic

If REM never gave us Up, Radiohead never gives us Kid A.

If U2 never gives us Zooropa, neither Up nor Kid A get made.

I'm so completely fond of Zooropa. It's surprising to me that it's so underrated by U2 fans. It's a real gem and I love how they just banged it out, rather than overthinking things, which seems to be their usual approach. They should try that method more often and just throw it out there and see what people think. They seem to be a band that second guesses their material and works it over and over again. Obvs, that's paid huge dividend over the years, so more power to 'em, but I love how Zooropa just came out of nowhere, while the band was still touring in support of Achtung Baby.

Zooropa is one of my ten favorite records of all-time. It went the whole "Hugely popular alternative guitar rock band makes an album almost completely devoid of conventional guitars and signature sounds" path before R.E.M. and Radiohead went down it on Up and Kid A.

The studio version is really a letdown compared to the Road Movie version, isn't it?AndySlash wrote:am i the only one that likes revolution?
