J. Robert Youngtown - Moderate Aspects

I wanted to rescue this album from the RM black hole that is the ''release'' forum and give it a shout-out over here. One of our own has just put out a great pop-rock record and it deserves your attention. It's a great blend of sunny but slightly demented major-key pop (think some of Wellwater Conspiracy's wonkier head-bobbers) and ferocious, chord-heavy rock and roll in the vein of Pete Townshend and Robert Pollard. And as a jazz guy a lot of the sideways chord progressions are right up my alley. I won't post too much more about it for fear of repeating what I said about the record in its liner notes, which I was flattered to be asked to write.

You can purchase and preview Moderate Aspects here:

My favorite tracks are probably ''Dreaming'' and ''Man For All Seasons.'' Take a few minutes to listen to a few songs and help an RMer out. :)

Have given this a few spins and really enjoyed it. The tracks KD mentioned are great, I totally get the Wellwater comparison. Hypnotised By A Mirror is probably my current fave.

There are some really cool rockier moments too like 'This Is What You Do' and the cover of the Fastback's 'Always Tomorrow' :nice:

Oooh! Oooh! I know! I know!

I've been spinning this for the past few weeks and have really enjoyed it. I like the guitar-driven feel and much of the songwriting hits close to home for me for various reasons.

"Maybe Tomorrow" opens with lyrics that immediately hit me between the eyes. I'm facing a big move away from a small town that I've lived in the past 21 years, re-structuring a business, chasing dreams and family hopes. There's no guarantees though, and of this I'm painfully aware. "Hypnotised by a Mirror" is a fave, I enjoy much of the up-tempo stuff here.

I enjoy the whole middle section of the album but it's the run "Live That Way" --> "Instructions" ---> "Don't Tell Me You're Lonely" that really stands out for me. A slowed vibe with a few quirky musical twists thrown in - good stuff. The closing cover is a great end to a great album. Well done indeed.

Great to see more polished new music from the far away reaches of Launceston in our very own Apple Isle. Tasmania - If we were to mail Australia to the world you would be our postage stamp.

Here's another album review from the main music press in Melbourne.

"Moderate Aspects, by just about any stretch of the critical imagination, is a quality powerpop record."

If there is ever a Brisbane to Broome leg of the tour you'll both be the first to know :-) Actually I've never played Brisbane it might be time to try book a show considering it's one of the major cities.

Moderate Aspects, by just about any stretch of the critical imagination, is a quality powerpop record. You hear the whimsical Southern pop tones of Alex Chilton and Chris Bell on Maybe Tomorrow; Hypnotised by a Mirror could be the best obscure Who track never uncovered by You Am I. This Is What You Do channels The Raspberries for an introspective Sunday afternoon, Hours is all sweetness and loveliness and Dreaming offers a path to the soft and tender realms of the Paisley Underground.
