The added scenes were largely pointless. This right here is one of the worst things in film history. Seriously, who the hell thought this was a good idea? It's embarrassing.

Yeah, anything that pulled me out of the original story is what pissed me off the most: that scene and Jabba in IV.
Second worst is changing the motivations of characters: Greedo shooting first b/c Han's too good of a guy.
Third is erasing work by original actors: Changing Boba Fett's voice and erasing old Anakin Skywalker in VI.

Most of the other other stuff, unless it looks stupid like the sand speeder flying into Mos Eisley, don't bother me much. In fact, I like the added windows in Cloud City and the added Stormtroopers in the Death Star.

I watched IV yesterday with my kids. The part where Obi talks about the Stormtroopers being more accurate than Tuskens with their blasters stood out as pretty stupid.

did you show the originals or the re-releases with all the extra stuff? I liked some of the enhanced effects but I was rarely a fan of the added scenes. I wonder if they are not as distracting if they're the first way you've seen the stor.

It's the first special edition release from sometime in the late 90's. There were some enhancements, but no where as many as the bluray version. Most of the ship battle scenes are the original model footage, with just a little CGI here and there. The biggest enhancement in this set is picture/sound quality. I've got the bluray version, but I wanted the boys to really experience the original trilogy in the original format first. We didn't even use the plasma TV, instead we sat on beanbags in the playroom and watched it on the old 68cm Trinitron. It was great.

In time, we'll watch all of the movies again on bluray on the proper home theatre setup, but I think introducing my boys to the original trilogy in a more "authentic" way (like most of us experienced as kids) is the best way to start off.

My oldest started talking about it more this morning as soon as he woke up. He's very enthralled with it all, and is keen on understanding the story properly. He has watched some of the Clone Wars episodes, so he knows some of the characters. But I had to explain about Obi Wan being much older in episode IV because it's set further into the future. He knew of Anakin too, so I explained that he is Luke's father. At this stage, he doesn't know that Anakin is Darth, so I'm a little excited about watching Empire with the boys next weekend and seeing how my oldest reacts to the reveal of Darth's true identify near the end.

I've never been able to find any legit original copies in good condition. I'd love to see a cleaned up version of the original releases (i.e. no CGI at all, and just picture/sound enhancement, colour correction, corrected widescreen ratio, etc) on DVD or bluray.

They included the original releases with the 2004(?) release on DVD I believe, but it was terrible picture quality and screen ratio. George really doesn't want us to enjoy the movies as they were originally made, ever again.
