It is, it's just original stupid. Kind of like the Luke/Leia kiss or Obi not recognising the droids.
I'm sure the assumption is that he was pretending not to recognize them.

Sure beats "Oh, god. These fucking guys. I haven't seen these pieces of shit since your father grew his hair out and killed all those kids. He was a Jedi, you know. And the best star pilot in the galaxy. No, really...he even knew how to spin. That's a good trick. Anyway, yeah. A Jedi. Killed a bunch of kids. What else? Oh, he's Darth Vader now I guess. I haven't really kept in touch, but I'm sure it's still him in that suit. No, I never got one. They aren't standard issue. He only wears it because I beat the living fuck out of him. But enough of that. Let's talk about your sister..."
I really hated the turn to the dark side and the whole child killer thing. The suit is also dumb b/c I think there needed to be some build up or something. What? Does the emperor just have things lying around in case one of his apprentices gets their limbs chopped off? Anyway, Anakin was "seduced" by the DarK Side, seems that's different then just turning crazy to stop the ones you love from dying. I don't know, I just really hate the prequels. They've pretty much made me not even want to watch the originals anymore.

They're so obvious, there's no subjectivity possible.

Empire
New Hope
Jedi
Revenge
Attack
Phantom

yes, there should be some blessed consensus here, as opposed to ranking pearl jam albums (a venture that i've realized involves praise being heaped upon riot act for some reason)

although i propose for RM's consideration the possibility that attack of the clones sucks just as much as phantom menace does, albeit for different reasons. the highs are not as high, and the lows are not as low, as the phantom menace, but there is a profound mediocrity pervading every second of AOTC. in pearl jam terms, TPM is backspacer and AOTC is the avocado album.

I dont disagree entirely, but you can't gloss over the "lows not as low." The lows of Phantom Menace are so absolutely dreadful. The only saving grace for Phantom Menace is the existence of the Machete Order.

i meant that AOTC is steadier throughout, whereas TPM contains the higher highs and lower lows. i realize that claiming that aspects of TPM achieve greater heights than those of AOTC would be contentious, so i figured that would be the sticking point. keep in mind, however, skitch and RM at large, how little i care about defending my opinion.

Clones is definitely every bit as bad as Phantom.

Revenge is not exactly six steps up from that, either.

It is as bad, but I liked all the droidrobots fighting the twinclones. That was fun.

Mark H does look appropriately enthused there, I guess. But no way in hell Harrison will be that awake during any of this movie.

So what are the "highs" in the Phantom Menace? I'm not being a smart ass, I really can't think of any. The entire movie is a "low".
