I have to admit as much as I like to defend various genre movies while occasionally (mostly unsuccessfully) offering a counter point to McP's "Bah Humbugs" I'm kind of tiring of disaster porn. It used to be that the heroes would prevent the disaster now it's 'things would have been worse if not for our heroes'. It's kind of a bummer. I get that it's a monster movie and shit has to get blown up this is more of a general critique where it's like every movie and every show on the History Channel is THE END OF THE WORLD. A billion people died but we won. Great.

McParadigm wrote:I think part of the problem with these types of movies is that, when they were first imagined, the idea of a giant monster attacking cities was probably semi novel. It also had a larger scope than a lot of movies risked to go, and were something of a precursor to disaster film stories.

Now, we do "giant thingamabob breaks shit and makes us look small" movies like every week. So whatever novelty or brand they had is lost. But at the same time, Godzilla HAS to be treated as the central component of the movie, because it is the entire draw of the film. So invention, creative rethinking, and brand evolution are lost. We get a few human characters, who have their own subplots or little dramas, but the movie is about GODZILLA because in order to sell it it has to be worked as a movie about GODZILLA...again.

And when "giant monster thing so look out," is your entire premise for your movie...well, that's kind of tiring to even think about, because we're so inundated with that kind of image by movies that often have other things going for them, and just happened to include a "giant monster thing" as part of their story or as the basis for a single action set piece.

It does not appear that the public's desire for giant things eating people has lessened.

Not necessarily true. Maybe, like McP, the millions of people who go see that shit actually hate it but for some reason have to watch them all.

Well it was Hollywood stealing japans thunder and totally botching it, but it didn't need to be anything other than what it was.

I loved the idea, but the fights seemed sameish and hard to follow, and even thoug I'm good at turning off my inner McParadigm when I'm watching a spectacle movie there were a few too many things that really were too hard to overlook

Maybe its just Transformers and its ilk lowering the bar, but I was impressed at how easy it was to follow.

Stip. there was nothin to follow. You naturally look for meaning. It's your thing.
There was none here. Big monsters trying to destroy the world we love in to make it their own. Humans fight back.

Though I do wish they'd shown more of the monsters masters/the ones making them.

I'm not looking for meaning. The wall idea was fuckinqg stupid and there is no way it should have worked. Also, if nukes hurt these things then a few nuclear submarines and the 7500 plus nukes currently in existence should have solved this problem

So surely a nuke will sort this Godzilla problem out then?
And we can get the eagles to take Frodo and sam all the way to mount doom while we're at it
