Equalizer settings

Post by stip »

I'm not sure what forum this would go in, but how do people like to balance the bass, mid, and treble mix on their stereos?

I usually drop the mids slightly, boost the bass slightly and then adjust the treble based on how that sounds.

When I use my headphones with my stereo I usually turn the mids back up to flat.

This is how I usually go, too. Though, it does depend on the system. In a car the mids need to be dropped more than slightly. Well, after I replace the shitty stock head unit anyway.

That's weird, I thought the mids had to be raised a bit in the car, but I guess it depends on the quality of the speakers. Just bought a new car actually with Harman Kardon speakers. They're not bad, but the stock HU really sucks, plan to replace it later this year. On a scale of -8 to +8, I have the mids elevated to +3, bass on +6 and treble on +7. Still not completely satisfied with the sounds, but I'll keep fulling with it. I listen to some form of "rock" music 90% of the time, suggestions of EQ settings are welcome!

Lower mids muddy a mix. You need at least a 5 band eq-er to get it sounding nice.

I lowered my mids in my car to -3 and kept the bass and treble about +5 and the sound appears much cleaner now. I think I had the mids up before because my speakers seem to lack the crunch behind the guitars, but have to admit I'm impressed at the clarity now after bumping the mids down. I was afraid by doing that it would also take the vocals down too low in the mix....

in the car i do a slight bass boost (+2 or +3), a slight mid cut (-1 or -2) and keep the treble flat. i also fade the sound to the back speakers a bit. every car is different and i listen to metal mostly but that seems to be the sweet spot for me. ymmv.

why does it make sense to turn settings down rather than up? Why go with a -2 mid and a +2 bass/treble, for instance, rather than a +2 mid and a +6 bass/treble

Because you're not just setting them relative to each other but relative to zero.
