In the past I've used Wilco's "I Am The Man Who Loves You"

I've never really played with the settings on my receiver too much (I've only got bass/treble on it and usually keep them flat, unless I'm listening to something where I really want to feel the bass, like Beastie Boys), but I'm going to experiment later with this track. YHFT is the only Wilco record I have, so I lucked out. Any other LPs good benchmarks, you think?

Really sucks that you don't have adjustable mids. I find bringing those down helps more than turning the rest up.

Yeah, this is the next upgrade...I wish we were registering at someplace that sold stereo equipment.

If you listen to a lot of rock and a lot of PJ (for example), I would compare about 5 songs to get your settings. There will be differences though. If you compared Go with Hail Hail, HH has less definition and the snare has less attack. This will change your listening. Go for something like those mentioned plus maybe Faithful, NAIS and All Or None.

Then play Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. It has pretty much all you need.

That's about what I paid for my 2245. It's a shame you don't have the cash because that one is totally worth it.

Guys, calibration isn't as easy as picking something you're familiar with. No doubt, there's a wide range recordings from different eras in your collection. You've got to find a balance that makes the old stuff sound good without the newer stuff overloading your speakers. Or, you can just save different settings for each. I have done that, but it's more of a pain switching than anything else.

^ that's not a terrible price. with any luck, it could be the last receiver you'll ever buy. The levels on my Marantz 1060 are tweaked a bit, can't remember what exactly they are right now. But I like to use Zuma or At Action Park as a reference record.

Those Marantz models are great but $350 to $400 seems a little high to me. In my opinion, you should look at Harman Kardon, Pioneer or Onkyo units from the late 70s to early 80s. They represent the best bang for the buck right now in "vintage" stereos.
