Total DILF.

Yeah, at parts, but... it's a monster movie. It gets pretty fucking silly at times. It was the best possible compromise between Hollywood sensibilities and the unbridled fun of the Toho films, coming pretty close to surrendering fully to the latter. It did get bogged down by expositional dialogue and it did feel like the bastard lovechild of The Hurt Locker & The Impossible at times, but it was a well-realized monster spectacle with just the right amount of MONSTER in it (although there were a few moments where they cut away from something totally awesome that was about to happen for the sake of putting us in the humans' POV-- the film generally worked best when it veered from that. ALTHOUGH that one skydiving sequence was breathtaking-- it did feel like descending into the pits of hell). I thought it was fucking fantastic. I recommend watching it in IMAX 3D if you can.

I might have enjoyed this more if they didn't try to take it so seriously. Hell, I read an interview from the director about how he studied Jaws for how it manages to build tension and terror. This movie did NOTHING like that. The plot was comically stupid, but it refused to recognize that fact. That all just made Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen's horrible acting even more apparent.

$38.5 million Friday - should hit well over $90 mil through the weekend. All hail Cranston.

I'll be going during the week when all the schoolkids are otherwise engaged. Mwahaha.
