Beyond critically-favoured sensitive indie?
I binge-downloaded a bunch of albums topping Metacritic and this forum (eg bands: Deafheaven, Julia Holter, Mac DeMarco, Mogwai, Ought, Owls, Parquet Courts, Silversun Pickups, Steve Gunn, The Antlers, The War on Drugs).
I haven't listened to them all, but I've got through a few, and they largely seem to slot into that reverby, mid-tempo, lofi-ish "indie" thing that everybody's digging right now. Which is cool - I can dig it. But sometimes I just want to be gripped by my balls and shredded by a good ol' instantly-accessible rawk song - something where you can tell the band is actually having fun, rather than being all 21st-Century post-modern.
Suggestions? The last couple of albums I really got into on the rock side were Blunderbuss (Jack White) and Nico Vega.

As far as rock goes I've really been digging on J. Roddy Walston and The Business lately.

These guys aren't together anymore but their live show was pretty incredible and they had a couple fun great "garage" rock records. this song is ridiculous but I love it

When I saw those guys last year, it was one of the strangest concerts I've ever been to. There was a weird tension between the band and the audience... like, they'd heard that Argentina had the best audiences in the world and they were expecting them to go super fucking crazy, but for some reason it wasn't happening (it looked like everybody was just really tired, maybe 'cause it was a weeknight, or the band was late, or the fact that there were 4 opening bands... the audience was drained). Plus, it was the last show of their 2-year tour. So the guys were super fucking frustrated, and it generated this really weird dynamic were they were simultaneously pissed off with us and also trying to win us over. It was awesome and uncomfortable and I think it pushed them to play at their best and most energetic. In the end they had everybody going nuts.Strat wrote:and yes, that is our very own theplatypus in Japandroids.

Those types of performances always become memorable for me. Whether it is a band or a stand up comedian. I like that dynamic and tension that can cause for either the worst or best performance from an artist. Makes it feel less rehearsed/staged and more of a unique experience.
I haven't been able to catch them live yet. Love the album though.

Trust the punks to bring the fun. Protomartyr's one of the things I've already got a hold of, but haven't got round to listening to it. That Royal Headache song hits the sweet spot.super nintendo chalmers wrote:ABNorman wrote: I just want to be gripped by my balls and shredded by a good ol' instantly-accessible rawk song - something where you can tell the band is actually having fun

Re: Beyond critically-favoured sensitive indie?
I listened to it on the train yesterday - it's a great roadtrip album, but it was one of the reasons I wanted to find something more accessible, heavier and in your face. I feel like it makes an awesome album, but I'm not humming any stand-out tunes after I listen, y'know? It's an experience rather than a collection of fun songs. Which is great - that's what an album should be, really - but sometimes I want the other.dimejinky99 wrote:i really like the war on drugs
