Jeff Tweedy Announces Debut Solo Album, North American Tour

Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy is known for having a pretty relentless tour schedule and it doesn’t appear to be letting up anytime soon. He just announced a string of North American tour dates that will start in June at the Masonic Temple in Detroit and wrap up at Rhode Island’s Newport Folk Festival. In bigger news, the announcement also came with news that his debut solo album will be released soon. Details are still TBA but let the speculation and excitement begin. The upcoming tour will feature songs from the upcoming solo record so expect to be hearing more about this soon.

instead of going out on the road with the best band working now, tweedy's tabbed his son spencer as his drummer this summer.

Jeff Tweedy's New Solo Album to Feature Son Spencer on Drums
By JON BLISTEIN

June 5, 2014 4:45 PM ET

Wilco's Jeff Tweedy will release his new solo album, Sukierae (pronounced "sue-key-ray") on September 16th, and he tapped someone near and dear to his heart to man the drums: his 18-year old son, Spencer, Billboard reports.

The project is officially dubbed TWEEDY, and you can now take a listen to, "I'll Sing It," one of 20 songs set to appear on the upcoming LP. The song finds Tweedy working in familiar territory, singing in a hollow, almost disaffected, coo over a grit-caked guitar progression; the track veers off into a peculiar experimental aside, but the detour helps make the final chorus' disposition all that sunnier. Along with Spencer on drums, the track features background vocals from Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius.

"When I set out to make this record, I imagined it being a solo thing, but not in the sense of one guy strumming an acoustic guitar and singing,” Tweedy said in a press release. "Solo to me meant that I would do everything — write the songs, play all the instruments and sing. But Spencer's been with me from the very beginning demo sessions, playing drums and helping the songs take shape. In that sense, the record is kind of like a solo album performed by a duo."

Sukierae will be Tweedy's first full-length since Wilco's last effort, The Whole Love, which was released back in 2011. Spencer is also set to accompany his dad on drums during Tweedy's upcoming summer trek, which kicks off on Thursday in Detroit and includes a gig at the famed Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island. Check out a full list of dates over on Wilco's website.

Fake Fur Coat......nice
by far the best song out of all of these new ones so far...

I hadn't really been too impressed with the others too much.

I like these songs much more than the bloated current Wilco lineup that put out carnival music on the last album (Art of Almost is awesome, to be fair. One Sunday Morning too).

Let's be honest with ourselves -- with the exception of about 5 songs or so, the last 3 Wilco albums have pretty much sucked.

i actually loved The Whole Love minus 1-2 songs... much much better than Wilco The Album (by far their worst).

Sky Blue Sky I love about 1/3 of it... 1/3 is fine, and 1/3 is pretty dull. i think it shows Jeff's shift to a bit more melodic style.

So, yes, basically he was right. The last few wilco albums have kind of been poor :\

I did like the whole love. That seemed ot be a nice "Return to form" but with a step towards something different. Great mix of classic tweedy alt country melody and experimental.

Haven't been super impressed with the solo stuff thus far but I always find enjoyment out of Tweedy.

I love pretty much all of The Whole Love. It's a huge improvement over the rest of the post YHF work.

See, that's the thing. Is the Whole Love good standing on it's own, or does it only seem good compared to the previous 2 turds when in reality it's pretty mediocre?

And I still absolutely adore A Ghost Is Born.

I got into Wilco later than everyone else. When I was going through all the classic albums, The Whole Love had just come out. So i didn't have the years of mediocrity to stew over while waiting for The Whole Love.

I think it's the best thing they've done since YHF, is consistently solid, and it's highs are right there with the top marks of their catalog.
