I get what you're saying but those first 4 are, at the very least, far superior lyrically to Comeback. Pearl Jam has never been about the most groundbreaking music, but I'd say Indifference is one of their most unique songs.

I like all those songs, but for whatever reason I'd rank the other 5 far ahead of Comeback.

You're on an internet message board. Literally everything you've ever posted here belongs under "who gives a flying fuck?" The above post, possibly more than most.

Lists are just a communicative tool. That's a function. Hooray. Also, a quick glance at the current page of this forum reveals no standout hairdo, wang, or song ranking threads. It also reveals that somebody DID invite a discussion on a list of fan opinions/behaviors that are vexing, and you responded to it in turn.

songs where ed talks over slow music is terrible and that's why all of none is a dreadful song. that's why thumbing my way is a dreadful song. however comeback breaks this rule because ed sings in a higher key and because the guitar noodling after the second 'it's okay' is top notch and the outdo is very ear pleasing.

Come Back hasn't aged well to me. I liked it somewht at first, kind of thought they were going for a Helpless type feel. But then it turns into a pseudo country song with Ed almost taking a soul approach to the vocals. There's a good song to be worked out but it doesn't come across that way in the final cut. A more stripped down approach, like Drifting, might have been better and that's why I've said I would like have heard Willie Nelson cover it instead of Just Breathe. Do like the outro though.
All or None is fine, particularly musically, just not one of their top shelf slow songs.

Come Back is easily the S/T song that aged the best for me. I honestly don't see this Country aproach that Biff say it sounds or the almost soul aproach.
I think Eddie is delivering the song in such a emotion way, last saw probrably in Immortality, and the lyrics seems so "un-selfish", like a pride-less love letter to someone loved that has gone away. And I can simpathize with tha, thats why Come Back is always coming back in my playlist or in the setlists of my cover songs. Its a song that feels good to listen and feels good to play.
And it really confuses me how some people can't see what I see in this song, ya' know? I guess its not for everyone.

I like Come Back. Reminds me of a Buddy Holly song. It and Parachutes are the only S/T songs I still enjoy.

I don't hear much "country" in "Come Back". I hear an attempt at an Otis Redding torch song that kind of misses the mark.

I hear the otis redding thing too, and that's a song where the S/T production really does it a disservice (or maybe eddie just should have written it a few years prior). I'm a fan of the song though. It's not in any regular rotation but I always listen to and enjoy it when it comes up. Probably in my S/T top 5.

Since Im more found of post-2000 PJ, I'd say that Come Back is on my PJ top 15 at least.

It's trying to wear a Stax Halloween costume, for sure, and it's got a few structural elements that tie it to that aesthetic. But separating the song from the performance definitely reveals a firm footing in classic country. Reaching as far back as it does for inspiration, its inevitable that the song was going to end up being something that could go in either direction. It's not like the two formats weren't piled with overlap, after all.

Hell, Just Breathe uses the same progression as Stand By Me and Sam Cooke's Loveable. The only difference is that it runs I-V-vi-IV rather than I-vi-IV-V.

Thanks McP, I think we're on the same wavelength on this one. I also think the soul and/or Redding vocal effects mentioned above are the same.
What does surprise me is that no one else is hearing the country twang in the guitars. That comment was more towards the music than Ed.
Interesting how I liked Come Back more early on than most only to have my opinion change and the opposite has happened to others. But I'm sure there's other songs that's happened to also.

Can you point to a few classic country songs that share some elements with "Come Back"? I'm just not hearing it, other than a few twangy arpeggios. I guess Ed does sound a bit like Patsy Cline.

I like Come Back. But, then again, I love Patsy Cline. And Otis Redding.

Which version of Just Breathe is that?
While a Western guitar motif lost on the swings drum bass fusion, get your own thoughts into the subconscious often forgotten. "Pendulum" is a sweeping soul from the ballast.
