I can't believe Mark Cuban still hasn't apologized to the family of that white bald teenager with tattoos all over his face who got killed by a "Neighborhood Watch" leader with a well-documented racist past just for having the audacity to being walking to his dad's house in the middle of the night in that high-profile, national story from last year.

I think the bigger question now is, after what happened this weekend, would Mark Cuban walk on the other side of the street if he saw Harry Lime coming?

Was Elliot Rodger a close friend, or just an acquaintance?

Yeah I was wondering about that too. Though to be honest, a white guy with tattoos on his face is more likely to inspire pity or laughter than fear.theplatypus wrote:"In the same breath that he talked about walking across the street from a black dude in a hoodie, followed it up by talking about the white dude who's bald-headed with tats all over his face and his body and what-have-you. I think the main idea was to the describe a thug in baggy clothes, and the white guy a member of the Aryan Brotherhood.BurtReynolds wrote:Yeah I was wondering about that too. And obviously that look is a major concern for both blacks & whites (as Stephen A. even alluded to). That's just a basic human reaction in this country. When a lot of black gangs wear thick, loose clothing (especially in the summer season), there is an aura of suspicion. I wish no one felt this, but I'm not going to blame someone for a knee jerk reaction. The Martin case (just as an example) was obviously brought to another level, but that's another issue. This is only addressing Cuban's comments about someone's initial feelings.Lament wrote:Harry Lime wrote:I think the main idea was tothe describe a thug in baggy clothes, and the white guy a member of the Aryan Brotherhoodjustify being racist against a fairly commonly dressed black person by comparing him to a very extreme example of a white person.
More importantly, you're getting so caught up in the particulars of the chosen words that you're ignoring the "bigger picture". A lot of people get the gist of what they're talking about, but you keep digging for moot points.

Also, Lament, I find it frustrating that you cannot admit to the inner problems that the black community faces. Just as the whites need to deal with their faults & prejudices, the blacks have their own. And yes, people in the black community are prejudice too. Take for an example when black federal agents seize houses in the projects. They're constantly called an "Uncle Tom". This is a problem, Lament.
And there are probably plenty of other RMers who would love to chime in and concur with what I'm saying, but they're too afraid of posters like you, platy, and chud erroneously cementing them as a racist. I don't know if that's a joke, or whatever, but it serves no good here.

Re: Can we talk about the sterling/silver thing?
I love that you genuinely believe you've stumbled upon a grand insight when you say that people of color can also be prejudiced, and that there are an enormous amount of issues within different communities. No fucking shit. That has nothing to do with the issue at hand; if you can't see why admitting to being afraid of a "black kid in a hoodie", and drawing some bizarre parallel between a black kid in a hoodie and a tatted-up skinhead is objectionable (especially considering "black kid in a hoodie" is a particularly loaded description on the heels of Trayvon Martin's murder), then there's really no getting to you.
Also. When you say shit like "we never hear about black violence against whites", you come off like a sheltered moron. Get out of your narrow little world, man.

I cannot believe I'm reading responses from someone who lives down in South America, and does not experience & hear stories of the day-to-day social relations in this country. Please, shut the fuck up.
And I should get out more? I work with plethora of different minorities. And I respect a great number of them. Also, I hang out with a group of federal agents. I hear firsthand accounts. Again, you don't live in this country. Shut up.

Also, I love that the response to a comment that says "your views are ignorant and insulated" is "I AM HERE EVERY DAY, OF COURSE I'M NOT INSULATED".
