It was 2013. And yes, it sucked.

Felt like a weird prequel to Planet of the Apes..dont know if that ending was an homage or tip of the hat, but the casting choice alone was totally baffling..As if the most whimpering spineless annoying actress in all Hollywood could carry such a role. She was awful. I can't stand her.

Totally. Those Malick-y trailers did NOT accurately reflect the hyperactive, incomprehensible action din that is that movie.

Wasn't Kevin Costner in that movie? That's enough for me not to see it.

What's with all the Gravity hate? It wasn't perfect, but I thought it was pretty damn entertaining.

Thing is, I didn't. And it was still worse than I could have imagined. It's hard for a movie to let you down when you have zero expectations going in. Man of Steel pulled it off.

Strangely, costner was really really great in this movie. Moving performance. And i don't say that lightly.

Best: Pacific Rim
Worst: 3 way tie between MOS, Gravity, and Jack Reacher.

I wouldn't say it was my favorite of 2013, but I really enjoyed this as well. Felt like David Lynch meets Asian action flick.

Gravity was an ingenuously directed disaster movie; the beautifully arranged opening sequence was worth the price of admission alone.

Best, I dunno, Marçal Forés's Animals was made in 2012 but didn't get released internationally until 2013, so maybe that one. Worst, I wanna say The Hangover III, but it seems like such an easy target. The Counselor was pretty bad.

I thought Gravity was just a great spectacle movie, with CG that didn't make me want to throttle somebody (I'm looking at you, Peter Jackson).

You're all wrong about the worst movie though. I don't know that I've ever been quite as angry as when I sat through A Good Day to Die Hard. The first time I haven't found something to enjoy in a Die Hard film.

I actually thought the direction was terrible in Gravity. Cuaron's insistence on doing that opening sequence in one shot was distractingly showy and felt more like a proclamation of "I AM ALFONSO CUARON AND I'M KNOWN FOR LONG TAKES" than an organically conceived and executed sequence.

Also, I just want to echo that The Counselor and A Good Day to Die Hard were awful. There were lots of crap movies in 2013. But there were more good ones, I would say.

I think I derived more enjoyment out of the almost balletical unraveling of that sequence than any gripes I could have with Cuaron being showy. Also, you thought the direction was "terrible"? I'm going to assume you're being hyperbolic, because there was nothing about the use of cinematric devices, plays on POV, camera movement and sequencing in that movie that pointed to anything other than a visual storytelling powerhouse at total ease with the elements he's juggling. I understand, and to some point sympathize, with the issues that people can raise about the story, the dialogue and the music, but I can't really fathom how someone with an understanding of cinematic language can diss the movie on a compositional level.

A 2013 film that was really great and didn't get a whole lot of attention was Denis Côté's Vic + Flo Saw a Bear. I don't know that I'd call it the best of the year, but I'm throwing it out there because it deserved more love than it got. Crushing.
