No Code: Official Album Thread

This one has the best whole side of any PJ record. Sometimes through Smile. Doesn't get better than that anywhere in their entire catalogue.

I think Ten, Vitalogy, Backspacer, and S/T have a better run of 1-5 songs. Probably Vs. too.

Definitely better than Riot act and Binaural though!

It absolutely does.

I love the production but not sure I'd describe it as crisp but whatever. It's more that you don't notice the 'production' it just sounds like them playing and you can hear everyone. The only thing that annoys me is the fading in and out of Mike's leads in Red Mosquito - it sounds amateur. I can see in a few places why they felt they rushed the recording of that as there are a few more mistakes and bum notes than you would usually expect - but then I quite like that.

I would say that whatever Brendan O'Brien was up to with Vitalogy and the Merkinball single, that was a perfect fit for their sound. No Code for me comes close after this because of how warm it sounds. S/t suffers from some bad production, but I think, personally, that the songs make up for it. I was never into the mixes for Riot Act because I thought it sounded muted compared to what they sounded like live. Binaural sounds great on headphones, but I don't like the sound in any other format. This is sad because some of the songs on that album blow my mind - this could be close to my favorite if not for that. Instead it sits middle-bottom for me.

I really think the songwriting on Binaural is really interesting, and it does sound great in headphones. Binaural and Riot Act are the only records of theirs where I really notice the production in a good way and S/T is the only record where I really notice it in a bad way.

Of note: When I really got into them at first (Ten, Vs, Vitalogy) my mp3 qualities were awful and my headphones were cheap (15 year-old kid)...and when I started buying better headphones and thinking about production qualities was when I was getting into their later period stuff.

Yield is the other record were you can actually discover a lot of thing that are hidden in the production...great job from BOB...Binaural is amazing, but some songs needed that space that No Code has.

I love the way Riot Act sounds. I've long said that Riot Act sounds the best. I love the production on that thing. After listening to No Code on some really great speakers (for the first time) about 2 months ago, I absolutely take back some of the negative things I said about it's production. It sounds really nice. But Riot Act and Vitalogy still sound better. Or maybe No Code does sound better, I just prefer those other records' sounds. Not sure which is the more accurate statement.

Heard my first live version of this last night. They don't know what to do with it live and ed sounds bored. But the album version is incredible.
