Nice pick, Kaius. Big fan of Pearl Jam's cover of this one, too. I wish they did more Motown stuff.

Stip, I love you. I really do. But comments like this are going to make me quit this tournament before I even make my first pick.

Or is it because I used Motown as shorthand for soul?

The word "soul" is shorter than the word "Motown"

It'd be like if somebody covered "Even Flow" and you said "I like when they do Sub Pop stuff."

I would argue (Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay doesn't even embody any elements of the Motown sound.

But if what they meant was 'grunge' I would have let it go.

My dad loved all this stuff and always just called it Motown. So that's always been analogous to soul for me. I'm not sure he could have pointed out the distinctions between Detroit and Memphis soul. I am positive he, like most people, would not have cared

I also think equating Motown with soul reflects fairly common useage

It's similar to Motown in the same way Ten is similar to Bleach.

It's not about not caring about the difference, it's about being discerning enough of a listener to pick it out. I don't think it's very subtle. In fact, I think it's pretty obvious.

That's because you care about it. I'm outraged that people can equate bleach and ten, but most of the world was pretty comfortable calling the whole thing grunge

Yeah, but I'd consider you to be a discerning listener...

::pause for jokes from whoever is lurking in this thread::

What would you say The Dock of the Bay has in common with the Motown songs you know? It's far closer to being a Stones song than a Motown song.

Nice pick stip. Along with "At My Most Beautiful", "Then He Kissed Me" was also played. For two people with damn near opposite PJ taste, we sure do seem to cross paths outside of PJ.

edit...I'm drunk....was also played at my wedding. and I know At My Most Beautiful was played at both our weddings.

Some of it is really just a question of education. This was the era of music that I knew as 'cool songs my dad likes'. I've never tried to go beyond that because there was never cause to. I was never drawn to this stuff as an era/style/movement I wanted to explore in greater depth. I liked what I had, and it was enough. So Motown has always just meant (in practice) soulful black singers from the 60s. Which is, I think, how most people use the term. I understand that's not accurate and don't mean to offend :). I'll be more careful with my usage going forward.

Fun fact. Type dock of the bay into Google and one of the auto complete searches is 'dock of the bay Motown'
