I'm actually thinking about going to Riot Fest here in Chicago just to see these guys.

Re: Mastodon | Once More Around The Sun [June 2014]
I like Mastodon, but I don't like the direction they're headed in.
I don't really like the first two songs I've heard from the new one. As much as they denied they were doing on The Hunter what Metallica was doing on the Black Album, they were. Shorter, simpler songs, new producer, you could see it coming. It's the first step to becoming more commercial after 4 awesome albums (and Call of the Mastodon).
Mastodon was my favorite band before The Hunter. There were several decent songs (Blasteroid, Stargasm, The Sparrow, Spectrelight, Dry Bone Valley, The Hunter, Thickening), but there were some really boring songs (Black Tongue, Curl of the Burl, The Octopus Has No Friends, All the Heavy Lifting, Bedazzled Fingernails). And then there was Creature Lives. On the first 4 albums, the only song I would sometimes skip was Bladecatcher, and only because of the squealing.
Live they're going downhill as well. Both times I saw them on the Hunter tour, the 2 other bands (Red Fang and Dillinger Escape Plan, and Opeth and Ghost) blew them off the stage. I saw them 4 times on the Crack the Skye tour and they were great every time.
Crack the Skye is my favorite album of all time, probably will always be, but I'm afraid it's the last great album we'll see from them - just like Metallica with ...And Justice For All.

I think I'm the only person on Earth who thinks Metallica only became really interesting post-AJFA.RussellManiac12 wrote:it's the last great album we'll see from them - just like Metallica with ...And Justice For All.

I sure did. It's such a rock radio friendly song, I couldn't believe the band that wrote such songs as Crusher Destroyer, Workhorse, March of the Fire Ants produced such bland garbage.zeb wrote:Did someone just diss Curl Of The Burl?

I don't hear anything in their music that hasn't already been done better by other bands.
